<h2>RM 52-01 Skull Tourbillon “Vanitas Vanitatum”</h2> 
An entirely unique piece, RM 51-02 Skill Tourbillon “Vanitas Vanitatum” is believed to be a combination of two iconic Richard Mille models, bringing together the integrated skull centrepiece of the 052 Tourbillon Skull and the transparent casing of the RM 56-01 Sapphire. The Vanitas Vanitatum skull is intended to reference the ‘promise of eternity’ and remind the wearer of the need to live in the moment. Manufactured in 2019, the exquisite piece is one of the only rare models to have a case made of brown sapphire crystal. It uses the back of the skull as the movement’s centre bridge, while the upper and lower jaws hold the ruby of the tourbillon cage. The careful selection of the highest quality materials ensure that the timepiece is incredibly light, yet uncompromisingly strong and robust. In 2020, this unique special edition was auctioned at the Antiquorum in Monaco and sold to an unnamed buyer at a grand total of around £5,793,547.85.

<h2>RM 56-01 AN Saphir/PR00, No. 011</h2> 
This rare masterpiece is thought to combine the highly sought after transparent casing of the RM 56-01 and skeletonising movement of the RM 018 Tourbillon Boucheron. The almost completely transparent look of this model is achieved by the three component parts of the case crafted from single blocks of sapphire crystal – a notoriously complex material to machine and an incredibly ambitious feat. Unphased by the challenge, Richard Mille purchased a highly specialist machine and worked with world expert in sapphire crystal, Stettler of Lyss, Switzerland to bring the concept to life. Even with the innovative technology and expertise behind the production, the machining of the three case parts is said to have taken an incredible 40 days and a further 350 hours to polish. Just five of these pieces were produced in 2013, and at an auction in November 2022, the immaculate timepiece achieved a price of £3,179,750.89.

<h2>RM 27-04</h2> 
Designed in 2020 and worn by the Spanish tennis champion and ‘King of Clay’, Rafael Nadal, the RM 27-04 is a symbol of tenacity, power and resilience. Richard Mille and Rafael Nadal have a longstanding friendship and a common dream of pushing boundaries – those of time and performance. Nadal has worn custom-design Richard Mille timepieces on court since 2008, with a fifth iteration, RM 27-05, launching in 2024. As it stands, its predecessor is one of the highest valued Richard Mille models in the world, with an estimated value of $2.52 million, equating to around £1,937,262.60. The lightweight piece, at just 30 grams, features a suspended tourbillon calibre able to resist accelerations of more than 12,000 g’s. The innovative micro-blasted mesh that makes this possible was created with a single braided steel cable and weaved by the watchmaker, a concept inspired by the strings of a tennis racquet.

<h2>RM 001, No.001</h2> 
The very first watch produced by Richard Mille, RM 001, quickly took watchmaking into new territories and undoubtedly paved the way for the brand’s success. Mille was determined to include a tourbillon in his first creation despite, at the time, the component being incredibly fragile and considered impractical. He set out to design the first-of-a-kind tourbillon calibre designed for extreme shock resistance and, to prove the robustness of his creation, threw a RM 001 on the floor at Baselworld Watch and Jewellery Show in 2001 in front of prospective dealers and partners. His shocking gesture had the desired effect, and the initial production run of 80 were quickly sold at the then-eye opening price point of $135,000. These early models were made using German silver base plate rather than the signature titanium baseplate of his later creations, but even then, it was clear that Richard Mille would be making waves in the watchmaking world. In November 2022, the RM 001 – No.001 – fetched a price of £1,825,067.58 at auction. 
Richard Mille watches are not only a sign of extravagant wealth, but uncompromising quality, resilience and power. If, as the Swiss watchmaker says, these timepieces ‘point resolutely to the future’, it’ll be interesting to learn what the ultra-high-end watch market holds in another 20 years.

A decade on from the inception of the Mercedes Benz brand, the vehicle manufacturer had firmly established itself at the pinnacle of luxury automobiles, highly sought after by the wealthiest and noble in society. As such, a custom version of the 540K was commissioned by Baroness Josephine von Krieger in the 1930s as a graduation present for her son. In 2009, Swiss designer and businessman, Ueli Anliker, set out to transform his McLaren Mercedes SLR into the ‘perfect’ SLR in an extravagant makeover on a level never seen before or since. His ‘999 Red Gold Dream’ was customised with no less than $5.4m worth of materials in 2011, including 24-karat gold plating on the wheels, steering wheel, headlight surrounds and parts of the interior trim, and 600 rubies bejewelling parts including the wheel nuts, gear shift, and indicators. No expense was spared on the car’s bodywork either, with 11 pounds of gold dust mixed into the 15 layers of paint. Not just content with the opulent additions to the car’s aesthetic, Anliker also set out to boost the car’s 5.4-litre engine, increasing its standard 640bhp to 999bhp to achieve a maximum speed of 210mph. The result took a team of 35 people over 30,000 hours to achieve, and as an extravagant symbol of wealth, indulgence, and opulence, its $11 million price tag is perhaps not surprising.

Such is the scale of this part of North West England that many visitors find it is a challenge knowing the best places to go and what to do in the Lake District. Even those lucky enough to live within the park will struggle to take in everything this region has to offer. There is so much to enjoy here that many visitors find themselves coming back again and again, and they need never have the same experience twice.

<h2>Windermere and Ambleside</h2> 
At 10.5-miles in length, Windemere is England’s largest natural lake. It’s also one of the Lake District’s most popular places to visit and an incredible location for all kinds of watersports. Those seeking a water-based adventure will find a selection of options to choose from at Windermere Marina Village in the pretty lakeside town of Bowness-on-Windermere. From kayaking and paddleboarding to sailing and scenic cruises, there are plenty of opportunities to get out on the water and experience the views. The town of Bowness is a great place to spend time, and with thriving independent shops, cafes, pubs, and restaurants it’s a popular base or day trip location for many visitors. Head to the Windermere Walk scenic trail for a relaxing walk with fantastic lake views.

<h2>Buttermere</h2> 
A flat and easy walk around the entire lake makes beautiful Buttermere a great destination for walkers of all abilities. There are amazing views to enjoy and on a warm day, the lake is also a good location for a swim.&nbsp; 
Those looking for a slightly more challenging walk than the flat path around the lake could try Haystacks. This was a favourite of famed local guidebook author Alfred Wainwright, who called it the “best fell top of all”. He liked it so much he chose to have his ashes scattered there when he died in 1991. Such was the popularity of Wainwright’s guides that walkers still try to tick off his list of 214 fell tops, sometimes called ‘Wainwrights’. Visitors can also see a memorial to him in the local St James’ Church.

<h2>Ullswater and Glenridding</h2> 
Choosing which of the Lake District’s 16 notable bodies of water is the most beautiful is no easy feat. After all, each has its own charm and qualities. However, allow us to suggest Ullswater as a real contender for this honour. With its calming waters surrounded by mighty peaks, this is a marvellous place to be, whether on water or land. 
There are few better, or more unique, ways to experience this lake than by hopping aboard a traditional steamer. Ullswater ‘Steamers’ have been operating cruises here for more than 160 years. Trips run throughout the year and offer spectacular views of the mountains, including the Lakes’ third-highest peak – Helvellyn. 
Ullswater is the perfect base for experienced hikers keen to tackle the iconic hike up Helvellyn. Climbing the 950 metres to the summit via Striding Edge is on the bucket-list of many keen walkers. Another natural attraction nearby is the impressive Aira Force waterfall, which you can access by following a scenic trail through ancient woodlands.

<h2>Grasmere</h2> 
Grasmere has many qualities, but for many people the first thing that springs to mind when they hear the name is its association with William Wordsworth. The famed poet lived at Dove Cottage from 1799 to 1808. He described Grasmere as “the loveliest spot that man hath ever found”, and most visitors find it hard to disagree with those sentiments. His former home is now open to the public and is well worth seeing, offering a great insight into his life here. 
With Grasmere Lake and Rydal Water within easy reach, there are numerous walking trails to explore and opportunities to take to the water. Rydal is a great spot to hire a rowing boat or take a swim as there are no motorboats, making for a far more relaxing experience. It’s easy to understand why Wordsworth and many thousands of others after him have fallen for the charms of this gorgeous part of the world.

<h2>Coniston</h2> 
Coniston offers visitors a wonderful mix of scenery and history. A boat trip out on the lake is sure to be among the highlights of any visit, but many people come here to do the famous Old Man of Coniston walk. This moderately challenging hike, with a 2,633 feet (803 metre) climb to the summit, is often mentioned in discussions about the Lake District and England’s best walks. Those who complete it will be suitably rewarded with spectacular views from the top. Be sure to do your research and prepare carefully if you decide to try it, as the circular 13.9-kilometre route takes on average 4.5 to 6 hours to complete. 
Coniston is also famed for its association with author John Ruskin. It’s worth making a trip to the Ruskin Museum, as it gives interesting details about his work and life, as well as the history of the village.
