Where better to begin than at the very top. Scafell Pike is often referred to as the ‘Roof of England’, standing at 978 metres tall in the Lake District National Park of Cumbria – literally the peak of the country. Volcanic activity over 450 million years ago created robust lava flows and ash beds that now act as the foundation for thousands of walkers every year that want to test themselves against the elements with some of the most beautiful scenery in the country as their companion. The most direct and popular route is to begin from Wasdale Head for a steep but relatively short hike of around 4 to 6 hours, depending on your fitness and conditions. There are alternatives from Seathwaite and Eskdale that offer more sedate, and perhaps more scenic routes, too, if you have the luxury of taking your time. In any case, ensure you have appropriate boots, gear and wayfinding as the weather is famously changeable up there, but the result is always worth the work.

<h2>Kinder Scout</h2> 
It is absurd to consider that many of the people of England were once denied the opportunity to ramble, hike and wander through the beauty of the land they lived upon. Kinder Scout in the Peak District is an awe-inspiring place that will always hold a special place in the country’s social history for its role in making that possible. 636 metres high at the wild and windswept plateau, this place will be forever remembered for the 1932 Mass Trespass that represented a turning point in the fight for public access to the <a href="https://sothebysrealty.co.uk/the-journal/countryside-getaways-uk/" rel="noopener">English countryside</a>. Hundreds of walkers gathered here among the fascinating terrain of steep edges and gritstone tors to demand their right to commune with nature without obstruction. And it worked. 
As a result, we can all traverse this rugged landscape and appreciate exactly what it has to offer. The most popular route here is to begin at the town of Edale, ascending via Jacob’s Ladder, to walk along the edge, witnessing the breathtaking Kinder Downfall cliff before returning down using the Pennine Way. You could even follow in the footsteps of the men and women of the Mass Trespass on a walk from Hayfield to the peak. For as the famous songwriter Ewan MacColl wrote, himself a mass trespasser that day, “No man has the right to own mountains”.

<h2>Ingleborough</h2> 
The Yorkshire Dales is a place that combines the three distinct elements of the English landscape that have been drawing visitors here for centuries: geology, history and myth-making. At 723 metres, this is the second highest peak in all of the Dales, but the most interesting by far. The summit here was once the site of a massive Iron Age Hillfort that dates back over 2000 years. With stonewalls, ramparts and impressive design, the exact reason and purpose remains shrouded in mystery, with some scholars suggesting it was a sacred ceremonial site for the Brigantes, a pre-Roman tribe in the area. It was also an early example of 19th-century Romantic Tourism that attracted geologists, poets and botanists with Auden and Wainwright both mentioning the location in their works. 
Tackling this walk from <a href="https://sothebysrealty.co.uk/the-journal/living-in-clapham-south-london/" rel="noopener">Clapham</a> is an impressive way to go. It takes in a varied approach of terrain through Ingleborough Cave and Trow Gill, with woodlands and moors around you and beneath you as you trek. Good boots and warm weather apparel are always advised, particularly for any inclement weather.

<h2>Malvern Hills</h2> 
It would be easy to assume that the North of England has the monopoly on mountains and hill walks. Although further south, there may not be as many of the most eye-catching peaks in terms of heights and scale, there are definitely some standout examples of elevated beauty that are just as thrilling to meander across. The Malvern Hills form a 13 km ridge that strides over the Worcestershire and Herefordshire border with a high point of 425 metres that, on a clear day, allows one to survey 13 UK counties, although some accounts debate that fact. Broad grassy paths and ancient woodlands are here to be explored with more than a touch of intrigue and mystery too. Midsummer Hill is believed to hold mystical properties with solstice rituals and Druid gatherings often taking place and the nearby Holy Well is claimed to have healing waters that have drawn people here since medieval times. 
The complete Malvern Ridge Walk takes around 4-6 hours with ample time for stops to enjoy the views. There are several beginning points from Great Malvern, North Quarry and British Camp Park that mean you can take in more of the surrounding towns for that all-important hiking debrief with a cup of tea.&nbsp;

It is not just on the course where the vibes are immaculate. Birdies has food offerings and cocktails that really mean business. The menu refuses to be left out, bursting with flavours and brimming with invention. The burgers are the standout item, juicy and loaded with options to embellish them however you wish. The cocktail list is a fine example of high-end mixology, jalapeno margaritas, smoky negronis and Birdie’s signature “Gin and Tee” underline how this selection is far from run of the mill.

The course was subtly redesigned by Trent Jones in the 1980s and by 1999, it was the <a href="https://sothebysrealty.co.uk/the-journal/best-golf-courses-in-europe/" rel="noopener">top-rated golf course in mainland Europe</a>. La Cascada, the fourth hole on the course, is the club’s signature hole. It is a 5 par with a pond to the right of a two-tiered green. Many international teams have tried to complete the challenging La Cascada in record time, with a French team breaking the world record and completing it in four shots in 2016. Be sure to keep an eye out for the 17th hole, Los Gabiones, where there is a stunning water feature. Golfers routinely name Valderrama as one of the best clubs in Europe and it is a must-visit for any keen golfer.

<h2>El Saler</h2> 
In Albufera Nature Park, spanning the shores of the Mediterranean, you will find the internationally celebrated Campo de Golf El Saler. Designed by Javier Arana, the course flows over varied terrain, with some holes encircled by umbrella pines while others dwarfed by impressive sand dunes. There are remarkable sea views from many of the holes, which look out over the brilliant blue of the Gulf of Valencia. El Saler, however, is not for the faint hearted. It is a long and challenging course and the greens of El Saler are unlike any others in the world. The course is 6,042 metres long, spread over 18 holes, with a par of 72 strokes. With a golf school, 3 putting greens, 2 approaching greens and driving range, the club is fair game for both pro and amateur golfers.

<h2>&nbsp;Real Club de Golf Las Brisas</h2> 
Although there are many golf courses in Spain's Costa del Sol, Las Brisas holds its own as one of the best and oldest courses in the Malaga region. Much like El Saler, it was first opened in 1968 and is the work of Robert Trent Jones, the mastermind behind Valderrama. This innovative course was one of the first in Europe to use bent grass and while this was a bold and contentious choice at the time, it earned the club the honour of hosting the World Cup of Golf in 1973. Las Brisas is a fundamentally well-designed course, with a good number of water hazards and raised green sites. Of note are holes eight and twelve. Both feature a water hazard running almost the entire length of the hole, making it a real challenge to get to the green. The creativity and imagination behind the design also reflect, as the grounds host rare tree species from Africa, Asia, the Americas and Australia.

<h2>Camiral Stadium</h2> 
Camiral Stadium is located in one of the most spectacular parts of Spain, tucked away beneath the Pyrenees on the eastern coastline in Catalonia. This picturesque part of the country is known for its outstanding golf courses, and Camiral has consistently ranked in the top 100 courses in Europe since its opening in 1998. The stadium was commissioned by the European Tour in the hopes of building their own Players Championship course. The ambition was to rival the PGA Tour's Sawgrass course, and within months of opening, the Camiral hosted the 1999 Gene Sarazen World Open and the Spanish Open in 2000. The course is only 45 minutes north of Barcelona, just outside the idyllic town of Caldes Malavella under the Girona mountains. Designers Angel Gallardo and Neil Coles have painstakingly created an engaging and exciting course that is well worth a visit.

<h2>Finca Cortesin Golf Club</h2> 
Designed by Cabell Robinson, Finca Cortesin is one of the longest layouts in Europe, measuring 7000 metres from the tips. Robinson wanted to create a course where 'no hole has less than championship quality.’ It winds through a beautiful valley overlooked by the Estepona Mountains. Complete with 20 varieties of flora, perfectly manicured and environmentally friendly Bermuda grass and your typical Mediterranean forest, the club has been host to high-profile events like the The Solheim Club 2023, and the Volvo World Match Play Championship on three occasions. The club is also home to practice facilities that take their methods from the Jack Nicklaus Academy, where revolutionary methods around swing are taught.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<h2>Real Club de Golf Sotogrande</h2> 
Sotogrande is another of Robert Trent Jones' masterpieces. Opened in 1964, the club was his first European course and has kept golfers coming back over and over in the sixty-some years it has been open. The club has been used for European Tour Qualifying Finals and now has royal status, granted by King Juan Carlos I, which is reflected in its current name, which bears the royal honorific, ‘Real.’&nbsp; Built a mere 150 metres from the Mediterranean, the course has a par of 72 and measures 6,492 metres. It truly pushes the player out of comfort zone with 69 out of 100 bunkers placed around the greens&nbsp; – warranting higher accuracy.

<h2>Real Puerta de Hierro</h2> 
As one of the oldest golf clubs in Spain, Real Puerta de Hierro holds special status in the golfing world. First established in 1895, this club is one of the most exclusive in Spain. The club has hosted the Madrid Open 19 times and has been masterfully designed over the years to get the best out of its members and competing players.
