In the vibrant borough of Wandsworth and on the south bank of the river Thames, Battersea Park is one of London’s most treasured green spaces. The 200-acre park’s origins date back to the mid-19th century, when fields were transformed into formal gardens and the first public opening in 1858 was officiated by Queen Victoria. It quickly gained prominence as a venue of leisure and sport, even hosting one of the earliest exhibition football matches under the nascent Football Association rules in 1864.
