The history of engagement rings can be traced all the way back to Ancient Egypt, where rings made from woven natural materials were exchanged between lovers as a symbol of commitment. Often, these rings were worn on the fourth finger of the left hand as people believed that this finger contained the “vena amoris,” or the vein of love, a vein that went directly to the heart. Later, the rings took on a slightly sinister undertone, as in Ancient Rome rings made of iron symbolised men’s ownership over their wives.

Diamond rings came along much later, in the fifteenth century. The earliest documented use of a diamond engagement ring is Archduke Maximilian of Austria’s proposal to Mary of Burgundy in 1477. This influenced other members of European nobility and popularised the use of diamonds in engagement rings. 
However, in modern times, it was the De Beers diamond company that truly brought diamond engagement rings into the popular vernacular. In 1947, they coined the phrase “A Diamond is Forever,” which led to an increase in diamond sales as consumers began to associate diamonds with enduring and eternal love and commitment. Of course, the bigger the diamond, the bigger the commitment.

Grace Kelly’s engagement ring, given to her by Prince Rainier III of Monaco, is one of the most famous in the world. The ring features a 10.48 carat emerald-cut diamond, with two baguette diamonds to either side set in platinum. Designed and created by Cartier, this ring is the epitome of style and sophistication. Apparently, Prince Rainier had originally proposed with a different ring featuring both rubies and diamonds, but when he realised how popular large diamond rings were in Hollywood, he upgraded to the fabulous Cartier ring. At the time, he paid $4,060,000 for the ring. Adjusted for inflation that is $38,866,738.

<h2>Jackie Onassis, Harry Winston</h2> 
Presented to Jackie Onassis in 1968 by Aristotle Onassis, this beautiful ring features a 40.42 carat Lesotho III diamond, sourced from a 601 carat rough diamond mined in the Lesotho region of southern Africa. The diamond was cut into a breathtaking pear shape by Harry Winston. Jackie wore the ring only sparingly, keeping it in a bank vault for many years, possibly to keep it safe. Aristotle paid $2,600,000 and today he would have paid around $19,454,276.

James Packer proposed to Mariah Carey in 2016 with this astonishing ring. Although their relationship was short-lived, the ring was a stunning expense. It features a 35 carat diamond designed by Wilfredo Rosado. It is an emerald cut flanked by tapered baguette diamonds, set in a platinum band. The ring was valued at around $10 million and is one of the largest and most expensive rings ever. The ring captures Carey’s penchant for glamour and extravagance, even if it does somewhat undermine De Beers’ iconic catchphrase – “A diamond is forever”.

Earl’s Court in West London’s Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea has a fascinating history. This busy inner-city district gained its name from the Earl of Warwick, the local lord at the time. It’s hard to imagine now, but the area was once farmland. It wasn’t until the 19th century, and developments like the introduction of the Metropolitan District Railway, that urbanisation came to the area. 
The opening of the Earl’s Court Exhibition Grounds in 1887 brought more people to the area as it hosted various events. Earl’s Court was also an event hub in the 20th century as the Earl’s Court Exhibition Centre opened in 1937. This became a noted venue for exhibitions, events, and concerts from major bands and artists, including David Bowie, Oasis, and Michael Jackson. Sadly, the venue was demolished in 2014.

<h2>Kensington Gardens</h2> 
There are few better places to escape London’s busy streets than the beautiful Kensington Gardens. This 265-acre space is one of eight royal parks in London and was originally part of the private grounds of Kensington Palace. Today, it is free to enter and open to all. Kensington Gardens has an interesting past and there are numerous statues, monuments and fountains to admire as you explore. Don’t miss the gorgeous Italian Gardens on the north side of the park, near Lancaster Gate. This beautiful ornamental water garden was created in the 1860s and is thought to have been a gift to Queen Victoria from her husband Albert. For many, Kensington Gardens brings to mind memories of Princess Diana who lived at Kensington Palace. The Diana Memorial Playground, next to her former home, is an incredible place for children to play. It features a wooden pirate ship at its centre, a sensory trail, and plenty of seating for adults.

<h2>Kensington Palace</h2> 
British royals have been living at Kensington Palace, set in Kensington Gardens, for more than 300 years. Princess Diana and King Charles lived in apartment 9 and raised William and Harry there. Grade II-listed Brompton Cemetery was established in 1840 and is one of the UK’s oldest garden cemeteries. It’s considered one of London’s Magnificent Seven cemeteries, covers more than 39 acres, and is the resting place of more than 200,000 people. Among them are many notable people, including explorer Richard Francis Burton, pioneering doctor John Snow, and suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst. Many of the memorials here are grand, and this is a serene place to wander with its paths lined with lime trees. Brompton is also a haven for wildlife, including butterflies, birds, and bats. At the north end of the cemetery, you’ll find an information centre to help you make the most of your time here. Car enthusiasts and history buffs alike will feel right at home at the Cotswold Motoring Museum in the heart of the village. The museum has an impressive collection of vintage cars, motorcycles, and motoring memorabilia. Visitors can also enjoy Birdland Park and Gardens, home to more than 500 birds, including penguins, parrots, and flamingos, and is set in nine acres of gardens and woodland. Don’t be surprised if Castle Combe, Wiltshire feels familiar even on your first visit. This beautiful village, located just 12 miles from the historic city of Bath, is one of the most photographed places in the Cotswolds. Downton Abbey, War Horse, Doctor Doolittle, and more have taken advantage of its timeless appearance. The village is named after a castle that once stood in the area, but was sadly demolished centuries ago. Still, there is plenty for visitors and locals alike to enjoy in what is often called the ‘prettiest village in England’. The luxurious 14th-century The Manor House hotel has Michelin-star dining and is set in 365 acres of secluded parklands. The architectural gem that is the 13th century St Andrew’s Church has what is thought to be the oldest clock in the country.

<h2>Audley End House and Gardens</h2> 
Audley End House and Gardens, located in Essex’s northwest, just outside the charming market town of Saffron Walden,&nbsp; is a real must-visit destination. The house dates from the early 17th century and was constructed for the 1st Earl of Suffolk, Thomas Howard. The spacious grounds and gardens were designed by Capability Brown and are the ideal location for a relaxing walk. <h2>Hatfield Forest</h2> 
This ancient woodland, now managed by the National Trust, spans more than 400 hectares and is considered the best example of an almost complete royal hunting forest in England. People have been coming to Southend-on-Sea for day trips and holidays for generations. The museum was originally founded in 1932, opened by Mervyn Palmer after he retired to the area in the 1900s. Prior to settling in the town, Mervyn travelled South America collecting for museums, and many of the artefacts on display in Ilfracombe today are from his travels. The local community rallied around in support of the museum’s opening and donated their own collections of insects and taxidermy including, intriguingly, a two-headed kitten!
