St Pancras Station, one of the most famous landmarks in London, has a long and rich history that spans over 150 years. The station was opened in 1868 by the Midland Railway company and was originally meant to serve as the London terminus for the company. The station itself was designed by William Henry Barlow, a civil engineer who worked on many railway projects and was instrumental in the commissioning of the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol. Barlow engineered the single-span train shed for which the station is famous, and which was the largest in the world at the time the station was built. The building was created in a Gothic Revival style and originally known as the Midland Grand Hotel. It was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scot, who also designed King’s College and the Albert Memorial in Hyde Park, and is an iconic feature of the station.

<h2>The Age of The Railway</h2> 
St Pancras Station played an essential part in expanding railway networks across the United Kingdom during the nineteenth century. The Midland Railway company wanted to establish a direct route from the Midlands to London so that they could transport goods and passengers on their own tracks, rather than relying on those of their rivals. The station was soon a major success and an important hub for travellers.

<h2>The Last Stop</h2> 
However, by the mid-twentieth century, the station was no longer the success it once was. The hotel closed for business in 1935, and by the 1960s the station was under threat of demolition as it had been badly damaged during both World Wars. It was only saved thanks to the hard work of Sir John Betjeman and the architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner. Betjeman, who was a poet and broadcaster, was a member of The Victorian Society and passionately believed in defending Victorian architecture. He called the plan to demolish the station a “criminal folly.” He often wrote about his love of trains and architecture in his poetry, and he is remembered as a spirited campaigner for historic buildings.

<h2>Preserving History</h2> 
In the 2000s, St Pancras Station underwent an £800 million restoration project, which turned it into a modern transport hub and preserved its beautiful historic features. The station reopened in 2007 and became home to the Eurostar, which connects London with Paris and Brussels. What was once the Midland Grand Hotel is now the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, and the new concourse is filled with shops, restaurants, and art.

<h2>The Art of Travel</h2> 
There are a number of works of art on display at the station, the most famous of which is The Meeting Place, by artist Paul Day. The Meeting Place is a bronze statue of a couple kissing, evoking the romance of travel. There was some controversy in 2008 when Day added a bronze relief frieze around the plinth of the statue which showed a commuter falling from the platform into the path of an oncoming underground train driven by the Grim Reaper. Due to the controversy, Day revised this frieze before the final version was installed. Upstairs is a bronze statue of John Betjeman, who is gazing up at the roof designed by Barlow, in honour of the work Betjeman did to save the historically significant station.

<h2>The Brewery Express Years</h2> 
The station has also played a central role over the years in catering to Britons’ love of beer. In the nineteenth century, beer came from Burton-on-Trent to London and its major arrival point was St Pancras, where the beer could be stored in a huge warehouse and in the vaults underneath the station. Prior to the railway, it could take up to three weeks to get Burton’s beer to London from the midlands. However, with the arrival of trains in Burton in 1939, things began to change. In 1879, with increased possibilities for moving beer across the country, output rose from 30,800 barrels to 850,000 barrels. When St Pancras opened, Burton brewers agreed to supply all their beer via the Midlands Railway company, meaning it passed through the beautiful station. The railway company built a warehouse that was connected to the station to store 120,000 barrels of beer. To meet demand, the railway company also designed the cellars of St Pancras to store beer. The columns were similar to the warehouses in Burton, with a distance of 14 feet between them so they could fit multiple beer barrels. The vaults were fitted with a hydraulic lift and with space for wagons to manoeuvre. 
Of course, the popularity of beer in the nineteenth century reflects the fact that water was often unsafe to drink. This issue was taken up by the Metropolitan Drinking Fountain and Cattle Trough Association, who aimed to tackle poor access to safe drinking water across the city of London. In 1877, they installed the drinking fountain at St Pancras. It is made from Portland stone with an eared granite fountain niche and bowl. It is located near the southern end of Pancras Road. Not only was the station instrumental in keeping the city in supply of plenty of beer, but it was also key in bringing a supply of fresh water to travellers and to the people of London.

<h2>A Historical Hub</h2> 
Incredibly, there are now luxury apartments in the clock towers of the St Pancras Chambers building, featuring Victorian and reclaimed features. These apartments retain many of the original features designed by George Gilbert Scott and gesture towards the enduring impact of his design on the city of London and its inhabitants.

Located near Melksham in Wiltshire, England, Great Chalfield Manor is a beautiful manor house built between 1465 and 1480. The house was commissioned by the wealthy cloth merchant, Thomas Tropenell and is an astonishing example of late mediaeval architecture. The house itself is moated with a symmetrical stone frontage with large windows and battlemented parapets. Around it lies charming gardens and idyllic English countryside.

Thomas Tropenell was not only a successful businessman, but also a lawyer, and he wanted a home that was fitting of his status and achievements. The manor remained in his family for a number of generations before passing into different hands. In the nineteenth century the house fell into a period of disrepair, but it was proudly restored by Robert Fuller, an architect and historian, in the twentieth century. Fuller aimed to restore the house to all its original mediaeval glory. 
Nowadays, Great Chalfield Manor is looked after by the National Trust, who have preserved its important historic interiors and its extensive gardens. The house is now open to the public, who can tour both the manor and its gardens for a small fee. For those film and television enthusiasts, the manor also presents a great opportunity to see the set of the BBC series Wolf Hall and the adaptation of Tess of the d'Urbervilles. The house is a wonderful example of England’s architectural heritage, and it showcases some of the most stunning craftsmanship of the era in which it was built.

<h2>History of Great Chalfield Mano</h2> 
This incredible home has survived five centuries since it was first commissioned by Thomas Tropenell. Luckily, the manor has a well-recorded history and so we are able to follow its many different lives since the mediaeval period in which it was built. The house itself is built on the site of an earlier, fortified dwelling, which can be traced in the bases of curtain walls to the east and north of the building and in parts of its towers. The manor features an independent hall, which has gabled cross wings and oriel windows. The hall is unusually symmetrical for the age of the building, which makes it an even more significant example of mediaeval building and architecture. The hall is connected to the parish church, which faces into the courtyard, and which was also built by Tropenell. The intimate connection between the church and the hall indicate how interconnected religious and secular authorities were at the time. Tropenell, who began his working life as a lawyer and later moved into business with the aim of becoming a substantial landowner, acquired many manors over the course of his life and by the time of his death he was a minor member of the landed gentry. 
Eventually, the house ended up in the hands of the Eyre family, when Ann Tropenell married John Eyre in 1550. It remained in the Eyre family for three generations, until in 1631, Sir John Eyre sold the manor to Sir Richard Gurney, Lord Mayor of London. The manor then changed hands again several times until it was held by the Neale family in the nineteenth century. The Neales hired the architect Thomas Larkins Walker to survey and restore the property, but his plans were never carried out and the house was sadly reduced and adapted to be a farmhouse. As part of this process, it lost many of its more ornate features. 
It seemed for many years that the house was to remain in a state of ill-repair until it was purchased by George Fuller in the early twentieth century. Fuller, along with his son Robert Fuller and Sir Harold Brakspear, began a restoration of the house and gardens sympathetic to its mediaeval origins. Robert Fuller donated the house to the National Trust in 1943, and his grandchildren still live in the manor, managing it for the National Trust. They often host community events and the manor is still a central part of the local community. 
After the manor passed to the Fullers it housed a number of notable guests. George Bernard Shaw, the celebrated playwright and critic, was a close friend of Fuller and visited the manor a number of times. Sir Edward Heath, a British Prime Minister also visited the manor, indicating the historical and cultural significance of the site. 
&nbsp; 
<h2>The Gardens</h2> 
The gardens were restored by Alfred Parsons after the house was purchased by the Fullers. The gardens were redesigned in the Arts and Crafts style and complement the layout of the house with formal lawns, topiary, and beautiful mixes of flowers. 
The topiary is one of the garden’s most striking features and is made up of clipped, highly structured yews. These neat features are softened by borders filled to the brim with colourful perennial flowers, as well as roses and other traditional English garden flowers. The garden is laid out as a series of rooms, each with their own character and charm. 
There is a tranquil lily pond, orchard trees, and edible plants which hark back to the manor’s mediaeval origins, when such gardens would have been essential for providing food for the family and its staff. The garden also features a “mount,” a raised platform from which one can see the surrounding countryside, the moat, and the outbuildings of the manor, like the gatehouse and the church.

<h2>What’s next for Great Chalfield?</h2> 
Great Chalfield Manor is still a highly culturally significant location. It is the site of many historical films and television series, such as Persuasion, the 2007 Jane Austen adaptation, The Other Boleyn girl, and the popular television series Poldark. 
Besides this, the house serves as an enduring emblem of English mediaeval architecture and the ways in which it has evolved to meet different needs over many hundreds of years. The Bugatti Centodieci (translating to 100 in Italian) is a limited edition series that was manufactured to celebrate the marque’s 110th anniversary.
Inspired by the Bugatti Chiron and the Bugatti EB 110, the glistening white vehicle is adorned with some defining markers, such as five diamond-like air intakes, a horseshoe radiator grille, narrow LED headlights, and eight tail lights on the rear. The Centodieci’s build is long, chiselled, and wedge-like, bearing an aggressive facade. 3D design and virtual reality technology were used to conceptualise the design of the car.
Only 10 Bugatti Centodieci units were manufactured, debuting at the Quail Motorsports Gathering in California, America. Fitted with an 8-litre quad-turbo W16 engine that generates a power of 1,578 HP, it can sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 2.4 seconds.

The Mercedes-Maybach Exelero is an utterly unique gem commissioned by Fulda, a German tire company. It was unveiled in 2005 at the Tempodrom in Berlin.
Fulda commissioned this exclusive car to test their new high-performance Carat Exelero tires. In pursuit of being the non-pareil high-performance tire manufacturer, Fulda was in search of a car that was resilient enough to go as fast as 124 mph over a considerable distance.&nbsp;
The Mercedes-Maybach Exelero was the second car to test Fulda’s revolutionary tires. It is evidently built in the shadow of the Maybach 57, with its Herculean build that measures seven feet in width, 20 feet in length, and five feet in height. Much like the Maybach 57, the Exelero was equipped with a twin-turbo V12 engine, producing a power of 690 HP. Its record top speed was 218 mph, certainly fast enough to test the limits of Fulda’s tires.
