The big extravagance was that these one-off shoes were coated in 24-karat gold and weighed about 100 pounds. Totally unannounced until Drake unveiled them on Instagram, causing an Internet frenzy. These Nike sneakers also stayed under wraps until they were unveiled by Kayne West himself, at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles in 2008. In April 2021, these black suede prototypes, sold for $1.8 million, with the proceeds going to Doernbecher Children's Hospital. This was the shoe that Michael Jordan wore as part of his first contract with Nike, before the design of the Air Jordan. This is real history as far as Nike is concerned. Designed and manufactured back in the 1970s, this early Nike running design, the Waffle Racing Flat Moon Shoe, was crafted by none other than one of the company’s co-founders, Bill Bowerman. Ingeniously, he put the rubber into his wife's waffle maker to create the shoes' soles. Only a few pairs of the shoes were actually manufactured and one collector paid a massive $437,500 for those at Sotheby's in 2019.

Nike had designed the futuristic self-tying sneakers for the second instalment of the Back to the Future trilogy in 1989, as worn by the movie’s main character, Marty McFly. Years later in 2011, public demand saw the company produce a limited edition of replicas, imitating the design with muted tones of white and grey enhanced by a glowing icy-blue effect powered by a rechargeable battery in each shoe. All 15,000 pairs were auctioned on eBay raising over $9.4 million for the Michael J Fox Foundation for research into Parkinson’s Disease. They updated the sneaker for another limited run in 2016, raising a further $6.75 million. 
Nike shoes are regarded as a status symbol, probably more so in the USA than anywhere else. There are background facts about Van Gogh that pre-date his period as an artist. Born in The Netherlands in 1853, he was the son of a country minister. Named after his paternal grandfather, he was the oldest of six siblings, with his younger brother, Theo, becoming an art dealer, and in that position being able to offer support to his brother and his art. 
Like so many famous artists, Van Gogh’s talent was unrecognised during his lifetime, but his paintings have sold for truly astronomical prices in the last 40 years, making them some of the most expensive ever. More importantly, those paintings are some of the most celebrated in the history of art.

<h2>Artistic Career</h2> 
Van Gogh didn’t start painting until he was 27 years old. He had originally wanted to be a minister like his father but after studying for a year at the Amsterdam School of Theology, wasn’t allowed to sit his exams because he refused to learn Latin, decrying it as a dead language. Van Gogh worked for his uncle’s art dealing company in The Hague, then for the Groupil Gallery in London before he turned his attention to being an artist himself. He was largely self-taught, only receiving formal artistic training for four months a few years before his death. He was a prolific artist, producing at least 900 paintings, and many more sketches and drawings before his early death at 37, but it wasn’t until well after his demise that the Dutch Master’s talent was recognised. Although Van Gogh began to garner acclaim for his work with inclusion in higher profile exhibitions in 1890, it’s said that he only sold one of his paintings while he was alive – ‘The Red Vineyard near Arles’ – seven months before his death for just 400 francs.

<h2>Mental Health</h2> 
Known for his strong and difficult personality, Van Gogh alienated many with his argumentative nature. His mental well-being was erratic throughout his life, and fell into deep decline in the late 1880s, just as he started hitting his artistic peak. His brother Theo paid fellow painter <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/artists/paul-gauguin" style="color: #333333;">Paul Gauguin</a> to move to Arles, France, where Vincent was then living, to keep a protective eye on the artist. - Thus began a ‘Love/Hate’ relationship, andollowing a frenzied argument with Gauguin, Van Gogh mutilated his own left ear. Oonly the lobe of the ear was cut off but the blood-loss was so dramatic, Van Gogh was admitted to the nearby Hôtel-Dieu hospital. Because he only ever sold one of his paintings in his lifetime, he considered himself something of a failure., which ultimately saw him fall into a deep depression; towards the end of his life, fellow citizens of Arles signed a petition saying that he was a danger to the community. This led him to commit himself to an asylum. Van Gogh ultimately committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest, dying 30 hours later.

The two paintings that are arguably Van Gogh’s best-known works of art are just two of many of the celebrated paintings from the legendary Dutch artist. Van Gogh himself didn’t even think that ‘The Starry Night’ was any good. The painting was completed while Van Gogh was in an asylum in Saint-Remy-de-Provence, recuperating from a nervous breakdown. If his opinion of ‘Starry Night’ was low, Van Gogh’s view of his ‘Sunflowers’ series was just the opposite – he knew they were special. He actually painted a series of seven, one of which was lost during World War 2, one that is in the possession of a private buyer and five of which are on show in various museums around the world. Probably the most famous Van Goghs are his numerous self-portraits; he actually painted so many because he couldn’t afford to pay for a model to pose for him, such was his state of poverty.

The terrible irony is that Van Gogh lived in relative poverty when, these days, his works sell for tens of millions of pounds. His brother Theo not only supported Vincent financially, but he was also his biggest fan, publicising his brother’s work in his job as an art dealer. Theo died only a few months after Vincent took his own life, so it was left to Theo’s widow to keep the Van Gogh flame burning. Slowly but surely throughout the 20th century, appreciation for the artist’s work grew as his contribution was re-evaluated. His work has come to define post-impressionism and has inspired so many artists in the 130 years since his death. The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam has attracted millions of visitors every year since it opened in 1973. But it’s obviously the amazing prices that continue to be paid for Van Gogh's masterpieces that tell us how much his contribution to the history of art is valued… literally. Freddie Mercury is one of the world’s most beloved, larger-than-life rockstars. He revolutionised rock music and is still an icon to many all across the world, who fell in love with his charm, charisma, and outrageous sense of humour. Born Farrokh Bulsara in 1946, Mercury was eight years old when he began taking piano lessons and developed his musical skills. His family moved to England in the 1960s, due to political unrest in Zanzibar. 
Freddie attended Ealing Art College in London and in the 1970s he met guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, with whom he formed the now legendary rock band Queen. Mercury’s incredible creativity was central to the development of Queen’s one-of-a-kind sound, which blended rock, opera, theatre, and pop. Mercury’s flamboyant stage presence and astonishing vocals propelled the group to enduring fame.&nbsp; 
The incredible success of Queen allowed Mercury to buy his beautiful London home, located at 1 Logan Place in Kensington, in 1980. The Georgian-style house was known affectionately as Garden Lodge and was a private retreat for Mercury during his time with Queen, but it also reflected his boundless creativity and character. The house was decorated in Mercury’s eclectic style, blending designs from the Victorian period with Japanese influences. 
Mercury, despite his larger-than-life public persona, was an intensely private person and it was in this beautiful home that he found respite from the world with his friends and fellow artists. Following his untimely death from AIDS-related illness in 1991, Garden Lodge was left to his dear friend (and former fiancé) Mary Austin. Austin lived in the home for thirty years, preserving Mercury’s legacy, until the house came on the market in 2024. The property remains a site of pilgrimage for fans, who often travel there to leave messages and tokens on its walls for Mercury, whose life meant so much to so many.

<h2>The House</h2> 
Built in a Neo-Georgian style in 1907, the house features astonishing double-height ceilings, a mirrored dressing room, a bar, a library, and a gorgeous Japanese-style garden. The house is accessed through a now famous green door in the garden wall. Austin, who inherited the home following Mercury’s death, notes that from the moment she and Freddie “stepped through the fabled green door” the house served as “a place of peace, a true artist’s house.” However, Mercury’s ostentatious side is there, too, in particular in the mirrored dressing room, where he would don his signature white trainers and wax his fabulous moustache before a concert. 
Once through the green door and inside the front door, visitors are greeted by ornate door and window frames, vibrant yellow walls, and an eclectic mix of furniture. The saffron yellow that adorns the walls is said to have been Mercury’s favourite colour, and its brilliant warmth seems to encapsulate the singer’s extraordinary career. The two-floor drawing room is where Mercury kept his piano, the very same one on which he composed Bohemian Rhapsody. The bedroom, upstairs, is accessed through the ostentatious mirrored dressing room. Although Austin has since auctioned Mercury’s belongings in order to donate to HIV charities, the home was filled with his possessions and was almost a time capsule while Austin lived there. The property has a generous eight bedrooms, perfect for the lavish and entertaining gatherings of close friends that the singer held in this beautiful, private house.

<h2>The Gardens</h2> 
Mercury was also heavily involved in creating the striking gardens for the home. Designed in a Japanese style, the gardens are full of gorgeous magnolia trees, which bloom in a blush pink. The garden also implements water features and a remarkable topiary. Such a large and well-appointed outdoor space is not common in Kensington, let alone in London more generally. To mirror the Japanese design of the garden, the house also featured a Japanese living room, decorated traditionally. The garden was also central to Mercury’s creativity, the music centre in the house looked out over the garden, as did the bar where he entertained his friends and guests. The music centre, surrounded by the garden's tranquillity, is where Mercury wrote some of the most spectacular songs of the twentieth century. It’s easy to imagine the driving force of Queen taking inspiration from the grandeur of nature to pen classics that jumped genres from classical to rock – and everything in between. The house was carefully arranged for Mercury to get the most out of his creative and artistic sanctuary, away from the world and prying eyes, tucked behind a large garden wall and surrounded by lush greenery.

<h2>Items in the Home</h2> 
Prior to letting the property go, Austin sold 1500 items from the home, which she inherited along with the house after Mercury’s death. The items were sold at Sotheby’s, and the money raised went to the Mercury Phoenix Trust – a charity established by the remaining members of Queen that funds HIV/AIDS related initiatives and research –and to the Elton John Aids Foundation. 
Among the items was a replica of St Edward’s crown. The real version of this crown was worn by King Charles III, at his recent coronation. The original crown was made in 1661 and is named after Edward the Confessor. It is crafted with solid gold and is set with precious stones, the monarchy’s authority. The replica was worn by Mercury during Queen’s 1986 Magic Tour. Mercury wore the crown with a red velvet robe, emphasising his love of theatre and grandeur, a tongue-in-cheek gesture to his status as the undisputed king of the stage. Images of Mercury in the robe and the crown are among some of the most iconic of the singer. 
Also among the items auctioned were handwritten lyrics from some of Queen’s most famous songs and a handful of his stage costumes. Prior to the sale, some of the most famous pieces were toured as a display between New York, London, Los Angeles, and Hong Kong, allowing fans to see these much cherished items up close. 
The green garden door of Garden Lodge, of which Austin speaks so fondly, and which has been covered in handwritten notes of love and admiration from fans, was also sold at the auction for the staggering price of £412,750. Mercury paid the large sum of £500,000 for the home in 1980. It was listed for sale in 2024 for over £30 million. 
Speaking about the house ahead of the sale, Austin said: “It has been a joy to live in and I have so many wonderful memories here.” She expressed a desire to trust the sense of peace that she has felt in the home over the many years she has lived there to somebody else, in the hope that it will be for them, as it was for her and Mercury, a home for artists, music, and creativity. 
The rhapsody of design inside this bohemian home was destined to align with the unmistakable creativity and passion of its former owner. <h2>1970 Porsche 917K: $14 Million</h2>

The Porsche 917K was developed to adapt to the new rules set by the Commission Sportive Internationale, which put a cap on the fuel capacity of the cars racing at the Le Mans – in an effort to shift the focus to endurance racing, cars were forbidden from having a capacity greater than five litres. 
The 917K was created in 1969 and failed to perform well on the track. However, persistent redesigning and experimentation moulded the car into a force to be reckoned with. Equipped with a type 912 five-litre flat-12 engine, the 917 achieved a thumping victory at the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans race. The design was refined even more, and the 917 once again emerged victorious at the 1971 Le Mans.&nbsp; 
The accomplishments ceased to halt. The 917 brought Porsche victories at the 1972 and 1973 Can-Am championships, as well as at the Interserie championships, through the years of 1969 to 1975.&nbsp; 
The 1970 Porsche 917K was immortalised in the Steve McQueen-starring film, Le Mans. A celebrity in its own right, the 917K has gone down in history as the most expensive Porsche ever sold. <h2>1982 Porsche 956: $10 Million</h2> 
The Porsche 956 is iconic in racing history for holding a staggering 35-year-long record of lapping 20.8 kilometres on the Nürburgring Nordschleife in six minutes and eleven seconds. 
28 Porsche 956s were built between 1982 and 1984, all fitted with a 2.65-litre type 935/79 twin-turbo flat-6, powering the car with 611 HP. 
Notwithstanding its competitive top speed of 218 mph, the 956 was a car of many firsts for Porsche. It was the first Porsche whose chassis was built with single-shelled aluminium. It was also the first ever model that boasted astonishing downforce, owing to innovative ground-effect aerodynamics – in fact, there’s a model of the 956 positioned upside down at the Porsche Museum to demonstrate its unbelievable downforce. 
By the end of 1982, the Porsche 956 won the World Sportscar Championship, a triumph achieved the following year as well. It also secured a momentous victory at the 1983 24 Hours of Le Mans.&nbsp; 
The car went for $10.12 million – one million higher than its estimated value – at a Gooding and Company sale in 2015.

<h2>1953 Porsche 550 Rennsport Spyder: $6 Million</h2> 
The 550 Rennsport Spyder was a robust racing car in the 1.1-1.5-litre leagues. 
The 550, with its short and compact build, was inspired by the 356, Porsche’s very first car. Its defining feature was its "Fuhrmann Engine” (an aluminium, naturally-aspirated, air-cooled four-cylinder mechanism). It was designed as a mid-engined vehicle, enabling balanced weight distribution. Sleek, elegant, and sturdy, the 550 is one of Porsche’s most replicated cars. 
Only 90 550s were built from 1953 until 1956, during which it accumulated several accolades, such as the Nürburgring Eifel Race win and an exceptional track record at the Le Mans.&nbsp;

This flashy open-topped beauty shined brightly at the 1973 CanAm championship. It also went on to bag an iconic record of speeding at 355.85 kilometres per hour around the Talladega Oval in Alabama, with Mark Donohue behind the wheel. 
A 917/30 Spyder sold for $4.4 million at a 2012 Amelia Island Auction, adding yet another million-dollar jewel to Porsche’s kitty. Another 917/30 Spyder is currently up for auction on R.M. Sotheby’s website, and it is valued at $2.3 million to $3.2 million.

A 1957 BMW 507 Roadster is a stately beauty in its own right. However, coming from British Grand Prix motorcycle maestro John Surtees' garage, this particular set of wheels is extra special. 
Legend has it that Surtees’ got this Roadmaster as a gift from MV Augusta to celebrate his victory at the 1956 Motorcycle World Championship. Apparently, he saw the car at an auction and was immediately taken by it. The handsome car is fitted with a 3.2-litre V8 that outputs a power of 150 HP. It was certainly a swift ride for its time, and Surtees used this car extensively throughout his career to drive to the Grand Prix races and to-and-fro between England and Italy. He greatly treasured the Roadmaster till his last day. 
The Surtees family put the car up for auction in July 2018 through Bonhams, and it fetched nearly five million dollars, making it one of the most expensive BMWs ever sold.

A sleek aluminium-bodied ride, this 1956 BMW 507 was an exclusive two-seater car designed to allure the affluent American. It was the arch-rival of Ferrari’s California T, as both models were marketed as effortlessly seductive rides, elegant yet laid back. 
With the massive gulf between the ultra-expensive Mercedes 300SL and the commercial cars of MG and Triumph, the 507 was going to be the perfect in-between – elevated, sophisticated, but just about attainable. The beautifully sculpted car was handcrafted to the minutest of details, making it a truly bespoke vehicle.&nbsp; 
However, the 507 wasn’t very well received at the time. So, production halted at just 251 units, making it one of BMW’s rarest series. Notwithstanding its unpopularity, Elvis Presley fell in love with this regal white car and bought one for himself.

The BMW i8 Concours d'Elegance Edition is a bespoke version of the BMW i8, an exalted sports car from the brand.&nbsp; 
The d'Elegance Edition was created for the sole purpose of being auctioned during the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance to celebrate the launch of the i8 in the United States in 2014. 
This version of the i8 is bedazzled in “frozen grey” metallic paint, and the cushy interiors are woven with luxurious Dalbergia Brown leather upholstery, stitched in iBlue coloured thread. <h2>1936 Frazer Nash-BMW 328 Roadster: $700,000</h2> 
The Frazer Nash-BMW 328 Roadster was created at a time when the brand was gaining notoriety in the sports scene. This car embodied the engineering inventiveness and the avant-garde aesthetic BMW would soon be renowned for. 
Unlike most sports cars of the time that bore a heavy steel chassis, the 328 was a lightweight car with a tapered rear end and tubular cross members. Additionally, the 328 was fitted with two brown leather bonnet straps and its characteristic double-kidney grille.

A lightning-fast sedan for its time, the M5 30 Jahre can go from 0 to 62 miles per hour in 3.9 seconds. At the time of its release, this car was the most powerful sedan released by BMW.

To step inside a well-tended greenhouse, whether small and humble or large and decadent, is to be transported. They are filled with growth and promise, alchemy and beauty. The concept of growing plants in environmentally-controlled areas has an ancient history dating back to the Roman Empire. Following a bout of sickness, Roman emperor Tiberius was ordered to eat a cucumber-like vegetable every day, driving gardeners to find more efficient ways of growing food. 
Real agricultural innovation however came in the 1450s, when Korea's Joseon dynasty introduced &nbsp;a brilliantly-clever traditional Korean heating system (called ondol) built under the floor to cultivate vegetables in the colder months. Further advances in their development were made in the Netherlands and England in the 17th century.&nbsp; 
In 1681, the first stove heated greenhouse in the UK was created at the Chelsea Physic Garden in London, which remains to this day. It was established primarily to grow medicinal plants, thus expanding the purpose beyond simple food cultivation. In the 18th century, with the onset of superior glass-making methods, the design and construction of greenhouses radically improved, and ambition rocketed.The vast, elaborate greenhouse at the Palace of Versailles, built in 1789, is a prime example of luxury and opulence.&nbsp; 
This Paris luxury greenhouse set the benchmark in many respects, and huge glass greenhouses began to spring up around stately homes and exhibition centres across Europe and the United States shortly after. Mass usage and popularisation of the greenhouse started in the second half of the 20th century, when production costs dipped and more of them began appearing on small farms and garden centres, before eventually reaching home gardens. Evolution became revolution.&nbsp;

The Barbican greenhouse, as it’s most commonly known, is filled with the atmospheric sounds of rustling leaves and trickling water from fountains. The layout of the conservatory is agreeably maze-like, with surprising hidden nooks and winding pathways that entice you further into the greenery. More than 2,000 species of plants and trees are housed here, and there is also a pond with koi fish and turtles, adding to the surreal and calming brilliance.&nbsp;

<h2>PRIVATE LUXURY GREENHOUSE, VERMONT, USA</h2> 
Genuine luxury abounds across the 228 acres of this stunning plot in Vermont, which boasts an incredible seven-bedroom residence, a beguiling backstory, and of course – the greenhouse to match.&nbsp; 
Firstly, this is the mansion where Ian Fleming - creator of the legendary James Bond - stayed as a guest back in the late 1950s and 60s. Here, Fleming spent summers mining for creative inspiration, which led to several iconic 007 novels such as Goldfinger and Diamonds Are Forever. He spent a great deal of time in the mature gardens at Black Hole Hollow Farm, and it is only natural to assume he was a regular visitor to the majestic heated greenhouse, which is specifically designed for both growing tropical plants and entertaining. Set amid the manicured grounds, where there are horse riding trails, an outdoor pool, and a waterfall, the grandiose greenhouse has sumptuous terracotta floor tiles and tasteful bamboo detailing with plenty of space for drinks with friends – and perhaps a writing frenzy when they’re gone.&nbsp;

<h2>CLOUD FOREST AT GARDENS BY THE BAY, SINGAPORE</h2> 
‘Greenhouse’ is far too reductive for Cloud Forest in Singapore. This popular attraction is one of the best environmentally-controlled gardens in Asia, if not the world. Set within the futuristic Gardens by the Bay complex, visitors are thrown into an alternate reality: a gloriously misty, tropical world, teeming with exotic plants and architectural beauty.&nbsp; 
Inside the dome, the temperature is maintained to mimic the conditions of tropical mountain regions. &nbsp;It is kept at around 23°C (73°F), which provides a refreshing break from the searing Singaporean heat and throws the European concept of hotter inside the greenhouse somewhat on its head. There are regular ‘mistings’, designed to make you feel as though you are walking through an actual forest among the clouds, such is the moisture and haze, while the Treetop Walk provides spectacular views of the plants and the surrounding environment, including the Marina Bay.

Most eye-catching of all, perhaps, is the captivating indoor waterfall. At 30 metres, it’s one of the tallest in the world.
