Located near Melksham in Wiltshire, England, Great Chalfield Manor is a beautiful manor house built between 1465 and 1480. Thomas Tropenell was not only a successful businessman, but also a lawyer, and he wanted a home that was fitting of his status and achievements. The manor remained in his family for a number of generations before passing into different hands. In the nineteenth century the house fell into a period of disrepair, but it was proudly restored by Robert Fuller, an architect and historian, in the twentieth century. Fuller aimed to restore the house to all its original mediaeval glory. 
Nowadays, Great Chalfield Manor is looked after by the National Trust, who have preserved its important historic interiors and its extensive gardens. The house is now open to the public, who can tour both the manor and its gardens for a small fee. For those film and television enthusiasts, the manor also presents a great opportunity to see the set of the BBC series Wolf Hall and the adaptation of Tess of the d'Urbervilles. The house is a wonderful example of England’s architectural heritage, and it showcases some of the most stunning craftsmanship of the era in which it was built.

<h2>History of Great Chalfield Mano</h2> 
This incredible home has survived five centuries since it was first commissioned by Thomas Tropenell. Luckily, the manor has a well-recorded history and so we are able to follow its many different lives since the mediaeval period in which it was built. The house itself is built on the site of an earlier, fortified dwelling, which can be traced in the bases of curtain walls to the east and north of the building and in parts of its towers. The manor features an independent hall, which has gabled cross wings and oriel windows. The hall is unusually symmetrical for the age of the building, which makes it an even more significant example of mediaeval building and architecture. The hall is connected to the parish church, which faces into the courtyard, and which was also built by Tropenell. The intimate connection between the church and the hall indicate how interconnected religious and secular authorities were at the time. Tropenell, who began his working life as a lawyer and later moved into business with the aim of becoming a substantial landowner, acquired many manors over the course of his life and by the time of his death he was a minor member of the landed gentry. 
Eventually, the house ended up in the hands of the Eyre family, when Ann Tropenell married John Eyre in 1550. It remained in the Eyre family for three generations, until in 1631, Sir John Eyre sold the manor to Sir Richard Gurney, Lord Mayor of London. The manor then changed hands again several times until it was held by the Neale family in the nineteenth century. The Neales hired the architect Thomas Larkins Walker to survey and restore the property, but his plans were never carried out and the house was sadly reduced and adapted to be a farmhouse. As part of this process, it lost many of its more ornate features. 
It seemed for many years that the house was to remain in a state of ill-repair until it was purchased by George Fuller in the early twentieth century. Fuller, along with his son Robert Fuller and Sir Harold Brakspear, began a restoration of the house and gardens sympathetic to its mediaeval origins. Robert Fuller donated the house to the National Trust in 1943, and his grandchildren still live in the manor, managing it for the National Trust. They often host community events and the manor is still a central part of the local community. 
After the manor passed to the Fullers it housed a number of notable guests. George Bernard Shaw, the celebrated playwright and critic, was a close friend of Fuller and visited the manor a number of times. Sir Edward Heath, a British Prime Minister also visited the manor, indicating the historical and cultural significance of the site.

<h2>The Gardens</h2> 
The gardens were restored by Alfred Parsons after the house was purchased by the Fullers. The gardens were redesigned in the Arts and Crafts style and complement the layout of the house with formal lawns, topiary, and beautiful mixes of flowers. 
The topiary is one of the garden’s most striking features and is made up of clipped, highly structured yews. These neat features are softened by borders filled to the brim with colourful perennial flowers, as well as roses and other traditional English garden flowers. The garden is laid out as a series of rooms, each with their own character and charm. 
There is a tranquil lily pond, orchard trees, and edible plants which hark back to the manor’s mediaeval origins, when such gardens would have been essential for providing food for the family and its staff. The garden also features a “mount,” a raised platform from which one can see the surrounding countryside, the moat, and the outbuildings of the manor, like the gatehouse and the church.

Great Chalfield Manor is still a highly culturally significant location. It is the site of many historical films and television series, such as Persuasion, the 2007 Jane Austen adaptation, The Other Boleyn girl, and the popular television series Poldark.

<h3>Pre 512 BB</h3> 
Long before the 512 BB Ferrari could be transformed into an aureate wonder, the brand was at a crucial juncture.&nbsp; 
It was the mid-50s, and Ferrari’s status as the racing top dog was diminishing drastically due to new mid-engine cars. Thus, Enzo Ferrari was finally persuaded to venture into something he had always been highly sceptical of – making mid-engined cars. After a few successful stints of creating mid-engined sports cars, the brand pivoted towards making mid-engined road cars, spawning the 365 GTB/4 Daytona and the 365 GTC/4. 
In 1971, Ferrari engineers led by Dr. Ing. Angelo Bellei began working on the successor of GTB/4 and GTC/4, the 365 GT4 Berlinetta Boxer (BB). This car brought about a significant change in Ferrari's engine DNA, featuring a longitudinally positioned mid-mounted flat-12 engine. This new arrangement heralded the end of Ferrari’s high-performance car blueprint of the front-engined design. 
With novelty in its veins, the new 365 GT4 BB was stylised with the tried and tested facade of the Dino 206/246 and the Scuderia Ferrari – a sleek, compact tubular steel chassis frame. Its unique bodywork, which came to be known as the “Boxer Paint Finish,” was characterised by duo-toned hues, with the top half of the car lathered in matte shades of red or yellow and the bottom half in satin black. 
The scarlet-hued 365 GT4 BB was unveiled at the Turin Motor Show in 1971.

<h3>512 BB’s Rise</h3> 
In 1976, the 365 GT4 BB was followed by the 512 BB. The name is a nod to its five-litre, 12-cylinder engine design. A few subtle changes were incorporated into the 512 BB, making it more palatable to the masses. With a bigger and greater cubic capacity, the 512 BB was a more driveable car.&nbsp; 
512 BB’s 335 HP engine can propel the car from 0-400-metres in 13 seconds and is capable of achieving a top speed of 302 km/hr. 
Only 929 units were produced at the time, albeit the car represented a seismic shift in the marque’s engineering. It was unveiled at the Paris Show in 1976.

<h2>The Golden Era</h2> 
Ferraris are renowned for their vivacious and experimental colour palettes. However, a handful of the 512 BBs created history, as they were decked out in one of the world's rarest shades. 
Four of the 929 1977 512 BBs donned a unique, metallic gold shade known as the Oro Chiaro Metallizzato. The interiors featured sumptuous Testa di Moro brown leather. As such, this select fleet was indeed the ultimate lap of luxury. 
One such unit (chassis number 21881) was sold through Maranello Piemont S.r.l. of Milano to a company in Italy, where it remained under the care of three unnamed private owners in Turin. Years into its new life, this golden 1977 512 BB was repainted red and beige, concealing its inimitable colour scheme. 
This car was purchased by another anonymous buyer in 1997. Over 18 years later, the car was recognised as one of the world’s rarest, bona fide gold Ferraris. It was restored to its heyday glory in Modena, with its enchanting gold finish and luxuriant Testa di Moro brown leather trimmings. Every inch of the car, including the mechanical bits and bobs, was overhauled to its original state. 
It was acquired by UK Sotheby’s in 2018 and was incorporated into the London Midas Touch auction, an event curated to celebrate the evergreen metal through the ages. This auction was one of a kind on many fronts, with the golden 512 BB stealing most of the spotlight. Steeped in awe-inspiring luxury, rich history, and opulent wealth, the Golden 512 BB was one of the most aspirational exhibits at the auction.

This ritzy ride belongs to Riyadh Al-Azzawi, a world kickboxing maestro. This Spyder, powered with a 4.5-litre V8 engine, boasts a top speed of 199 mph. While a standard 458 Spyder is worth at least about $248,000, Al-Azzawi’s gold makeover set him back an additional $5,143.&nbsp;

The Kelmscott Manor is a Grade I-listed building tucked away in the heart of the Cotswolds in West Oxfordshire. 
The house was built by Thomas Turner, a local farmer, in 1570. Three centuries later, James Turner bought the home, 53 acres of manorial land, as well as the lordship. At this juncture, the collective estate came to be known as the Kelmscott Manor. A year later, writer and socialist William Morris saw that manor and was taken in by its bucolic beauty. He proclaimed that it was the “loveliest haunt of ancient peace” and bought it immediately. 
By the 20th century, much of the house fell into disrepair. It was incorporated into the Society of Antiquaries in 1960, which led to the much-needed restoration efforts. 
The barns were converted into snazzy tearooms and shops while the interior walls and floors were completely reconstructed. Most of Morris’ furniture, from his textiles to his beds, tables, chairs, and books, has been retained. Two rooms have been dedicated to preserving artistic exhibits collected over 300 years, such as display furniture from Red House in Bexleyheath and important works by Rossetti, Sir Edward Burne-Jones, and Breughel. The manicured garden is littered with grand old trees, rose bushes, and an orchard.

The castle was built in 1852 by Thomas Hutchison, a wealthy wine merchant in the Provost of Leith. Designed by prominent architect David Rhind, it cost £33,000 to build the castle, which at the time was a king’s ransom. After 130 years, it was passed on to the Marshall family, who saw immense potential in the commercial value and marketability of the castle, heralding a new chapter for the estate. 
The Scottish Baronial castle was converted into an opulent nine-bedroom dwelling for hire. While retaining its authenticity, much of the interiors were revamped to suit modern sensibilities. Clean, elevated minimalism has been employed while decorating the rooms with dark wooden panels, winding staircases, slender chandeliers, and muted colour palettes. The castle house also displays over 70 artworks sourced from 25 countries. 
A new orangery and a separate manager’s cottage and office have been erected in the garden. Additionally, 12 detached eco-friendly cottages made from timber and reflective glass panes have been included behind the main manor.

The 4.5-litre Blower is one of Bentley’s most quintessential series. A vision of Sir Henry Ralph Stanley “Tim” Birkin, one of the iconic “Bentley Boys,” only 50 units of this model were ever made.
W.O. Bentley was sceptical of superchargers and believed in the efficiency of larger engines. He expressed, “They would lack in their preparation all the experience we had built up in (our own) racing department over 10 years. I feared the worst and looked forward to their first appearance with anxiety.”&nbsp;
Armed with a mounted supercharger, the 4.5-litre Blower outputted 172 HP as opposed to the 108 HP produced by the regular 4.5-litre.
This car initially never won any races, confirming W.O. Bentley’s fears. He woefully stated, "The supercharged 4.5 never won a race, suffered a never-ending series of mechanical failures, and brought the marque Bentley disrepute.” However, in spite of Bentley’s displeasure, 50 of these supercharged Blowers were manufactured at Tim Birkin’s behest. The 4.5 supercharged Blower is a key part of Birkin’s legacy and paved the way for Bentley’s upcoming track success.&nbsp;
One of the authentic 50 models has been valued at $8,000,000-$10,000,000 as per a Gooding &amp;Company estimate. Few of the other units have been auctioned for an average of $4–5 million by RM Sotheby’s, Bonhams, and Gooding &amp; Company.

<h2>1932 Bentley “Blower”: $7.06 Million</h2>

This model is one of the aforementioned 50 supercharged Blowers commissioned by Tim Birkin. While W.O. Bentley wasn’t on board with the supercharger, Birkin had engineer Amherst Villiers develop one.
This refined 4.5-litre supercharged engine produced 240 HP. In 1932, Tim Birkin set a staggering record of 138 mph in this Blower, mitigating some of Bentley’s scepticisms of this new engine.
This record-setting 1932 Blower is a veritable fragment of Bentley’s history and was sold for $7 million at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

This 1929 unit is among the first ever aforementioned supercharged Blower models. This bona fide 4.5-litre was once Bentley’s most expensive collectible car, with some sources claiming that its net worth exceeded $20 million.
This particular 4.5-litre supercharged Blower did set an impressive speed record of 137 mph at the Brooklands Outer Circuit. It was later bought by watchmaker George Daniels, famous for his stunning luxury automobile kitty.
Several decades later, Daniels’ 1929 Blower was auctioned off by Bonhams, selling for $6,480,760 at the gavel drop.

The 1928 4.5-litre Bobtail was conceptualised when Bentley’s 3-litre cars had to be retired. This Bobtail had a bigger engine, equipped to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and other international championships of the time.
At the heels of a thumping victory at the 1927 Le Mans, three such 4.5-litres were built in secrecy near Vanden Plas’ Works. The aesthetics were moulded to comply with Le Mans’ new rules. The compact four-seater was fitted with a semi-vertical spare wheel and a bobtail-like cowling, which inspired this car’s nickname.&nbsp;
While the Bobtail showed incredible promise during its first runs, engine failures prevented it from taking off in 1928. In the following year, however, the car truly shined as a Works entry in the new JCC Double Twelve, where it finished in second place. In the 1929 Le Mans, the Bobtail came in third place in spite of severe mechanical issues during the race.
RM Sotheby’s valued the 1928 Bentley 4.5-litre “Bobtail” at $6,500,000 – $7,500,000 for a 2017 Amelia Island auction.

The Speed Six’s exemplary performance instigated Ettore Bugatti to remark that W.O. Bentley “built the fastest truck in the world.” This car was so powerful that cars from competing teams declined to take part in pivotal races of the era.&nbsp;
The 4700-pound car was equipped with a six-cylinder engine, producing 177 HP of power and a top speed of 125 mph. A formidable car, it led Bentley to victory in the 1929 and 1930 Le Mans. In 1931, a Speed Six won the Brooklands 500-Mile Race at an astounding average of 118.39 mph.
Only 182 Speed Sixes were built, and one unit ended up in the Bill Lake collection. This Speed Six went for $5.7 million at a 2004 Christie’s Auction.

This deceptively simplistic four-seater coupe was custom made on order for the Sultan of Brunei.&nbsp;
Only six of these models were made, all bearing a special number plate inscribed with “JB,” signifying Prince Jefri Bolkiah, who was the Sultan’s brother.
Substantial engineering aspects of the car were inspired by the Bentley Java, and some superficial elements were borrowed from the Continental R. The car is outfitted with a 6.75-litre V8 single turbocharger non-catalyst engine, empowering it with 534 HP. Its top speed is a respectable 158 mph.

This is real history as far as Nike is concerned. Designed and manufactured back in the 1970s, this early Nike running design, the Waffle Racing Flat Moon Shoe, was crafted by none other than one of the company’s co-founders, Bill Bowerman. Ingeniously, he put the rubber into his wife's waffle maker to create the shoes' soles. Only a few pairs of the shoes were actually manufactured and one collector paid a massive $437,500 for those at Sotheby's in 2019.

Nike had designed the futuristic self-tying sneakers for the second instalment of the Back to the Future trilogy in 1989, as worn by the movie’s main character, Marty McFly. Years later in 2011, public demand saw the company produce a limited edition of replicas, imitating the design with muted tones of white and grey enhanced by a glowing icy-blue effect powered by a rechargeable battery in each shoe. All 15,000 pairs were auctioned on eBay raising over $9.4 million for the Michael J Fox Foundation for research into Parkinson’s Disease. They updated the sneaker for another limited run in 2016, raising a further $6.75 million. 
Nike shoes are regarded as a status symbol, probably more so in the USA than anywhere else. That’s hardly surprising given how many high-profile celebrities from the entertainment industry as well as the sports world have been keen to put their names on Nike designs in recent years. Hopefully, they could name some of the artist’s most famous paintings, certainly ‘Sunflowers’ and perhaps ‘The Starry Night’. But there’s a wealth of information that reveals Van Gogh to be a complex character, as one would expect.

There are background facts about Van Gogh that pre-date his period as an artist. Born in The Netherlands in 1853, he was the son of a country minister. Named after his paternal grandfather, he was the oldest of six siblings, with his younger brother, Theo, becoming an art dealer, and in that position being able to offer support to his brother and his art. 
Like so many famous artists, Van Gogh’s talent was unrecognised during his lifetime, but his paintings have sold for truly astronomical prices in the last 40 years, making them some of the most expensive ever. More importantly, those paintings are some of the most celebrated in the history of art.

<h2>Artistic Career</h2> 
Van Gogh didn’t start painting until he was 27 years old. He had originally wanted to be a minister like his father but after studying for a year at the Amsterdam School of Theology, wasn’t allowed to sit his exams because he refused to learn Latin, decrying it as a dead language. Van Gogh worked for his uncle’s art dealing company in The Hague, then for the Groupil Gallery in London before he turned his attention to being an artist himself. He was largely self-taught, only receiving formal artistic training for four months a few years before his death. He was a prolific artist, producing at least 900 paintings, and many more sketches and drawings before his early death at 37, but it wasn’t until well after his demise that the Dutch Master’s talent was recognised. Although Van Gogh began to garner acclaim for his work with inclusion in higher profile exhibitions in 1890, it’s said that he only sold one of his paintings while he was alive – ‘The Red Vineyard near Arles’ – seven months before his death for just 400 francs.

<h2>Mental Health</h2> 
Known for his strong and difficult personality, Van Gogh alienated many with his argumentative nature. His mental well-being was erratic throughout his life, and fell into deep decline in the late 1880s, just as he started hitting his artistic peak. His brother Theo paid fellow painter <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/artists/paul-gauguin" style="color: #333333;">Paul Gauguin</a> to move to Arles, France, where Vincent was then living, to keep a protective eye on the artist. - Thus began a ‘Love/Hate’ relationship, andollowing a frenzied argument with Gauguin, Van Gogh mutilated his own left ear. Oonly the lobe of the ear was cut off but the blood-loss was so dramatic, Van Gogh was admitted to the nearby Hôtel-Dieu hospital. Because he only ever sold one of his paintings in his lifetime, he considered himself something of a failure., which ultimately saw him fall into a deep depression; towards the end of his life, fellow citizens of Arles signed a petition saying that he was a danger to the community. This led him to commit himself to an asylum. Van Gogh ultimately committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest, dying 30 hours later.

<h2>Famous Works</h2> 
The two paintings that are arguably Van Gogh’s best-known works of art are just two of many of the celebrated paintings from the legendary Dutch artist. Van Gogh himself didn’t even think that ‘The Starry Night’ was any good. The painting was completed while Van Gogh was in an asylum in Saint-Remy-de-Provence, recuperating from a nervous breakdown. If his opinion of ‘Starry Night’ was low, Van Gogh’s view of his ‘Sunflowers’ series was just the opposite – he knew they were special. He actually painted a series of seven, one of which was lost during World War 2, one that is in the possession of a private buyer and five of which are on show in various museums around the world. Probably the most famous Van Goghs are his numerous self-portraits; he actually painted so many because he couldn’t afford to pay for a model to pose for him, such was his state of poverty.

<h2>Legacy</h2> 
The terrible irony is that Van Gogh lived in relative poverty when, these days, his works sell for tens of millions of pounds. His brother Theo not only supported Vincent financially, but he was also his biggest fan, publicising his brother’s work in his job as an art dealer. Theo died only a few months after Vincent took his own life, so it was left to Theo’s widow to keep the Van Gogh flame burning. Slowly but surely throughout the 20th century, appreciation for the artist’s work grew as his contribution was re-evaluated. His work has come to define post-impressionism and has inspired so many artists in the 130 years since his death. The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam has attracted millions of visitors every year since it opened in 1973. But it’s obviously the amazing prices that continue to be paid for Van Gogh's masterpieces that tell us how much his contribution to the history of art is valued… literally. The most expensive Van Gogh sold at auction, ‘Orchard with Cypresses’, brought a price of over $ 117 million at Christie's in New York in 2022. <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/articles/21-facts-about-vincent-van-gogh">A little more affordable was ‘Nature Morte’, bought for a mere $ 61 million at Sotheby's in New York, in 2014.</a>
