The Junkyard: A Look Back at a Unique RM Sotheby’s Auction

On 26th October, the renowned auction house hosted ‘The Junkyard’, a sale of the enigmatic Rudi Klein Collection comprising 208 out of a total 567 lots.

Rudi Klein is one of the most intriguing figures among car collectors. He was born in Germany and moved to the United States in the 1950s where he set up shop as a butcher. A little over 10 years later, he decided to make a change and began pursuing his true passion - cars. Without the affluent means to collect high-end automobiles, Klein decided to instead open a scrapyard and indulge his interests by taking cars apart. He had a fondness for damaged or crashed vehicles, but was discerning about what he added to his collection. 

Throughout his lifetime, Klein amassed some highly sought-after vintage cars, but few details were ever available. He was a noted recluse and never disclosed the contents of his scrapyard, to the point that his family refused to release any information even after his death in 2021. Automotive enthusiasts from around the world have long wondered about the famed collection, and the veil was finally lifted this year by RM Sotheby’s.

On 26th October, the renowned auction house hosted ‘The Junkyard’, a sale of the enigmatic Rudi Klein Collection comprising 208 out of a total 567 lots. The remaining pieces, which mainly comprised engine parts and equipment, were sold online. As one might expect, the items put up for sale were far from being in prime condition. Peeling paint, rust, and missing pieces were all par for the course, but that didn’t take away from the awe-inspiring nature of the collection itself. There were a number of rare Mercedes-Benzes, including a hardly seen Pullman and 300SL Gullwing that was considered as good as lost once purchased by Klein. Other notable pieces include 37 Porsche 356s, an Aston Martin Vantage ‘Molded Fliptail’ (one of 11 produced), a prototype Iso Grifo Spider, and a pair of Maseratis. 
The vehicles are ripe for restoration and some of the parts - original engines, seats and transmission components to name but a few - might be just what dedicated restorers need to complete their current projects. All told, Rudi Klein’s enigmatic collection fetched a total of $29.6 million, a staggering amount for what initially appears to be just scrap. But underneath the layers of dust (and in some cases, rust), the Junkyard proved to be a treasure trove of classic automobiles, with a few vehicles that were long considered to be lost for good. 
At the top of the list is the aforementioned Gullwing, which sold for an incredible $9,355,000. The car is fully intact, though it has some damage to the rear bumper and its original black finish was at some point repainted to silver. The latter is especially unfortunate as this was the only Gullwing to be originally delivered in black.&nbsp;

A 1935 Mercedes-Benz 500K coupe that was commissioned for European racing champion Rudolf Caracciola was the next highest sale at just over $4.1 million. This exceedingly rare vehicle had not been seen in public since 1980, shortly after it was acquired by Klein, and has become a bit of a Holy Grail amongst collectors.

The next highest sale, at around $3.3 million, was of a 1939 Horch 855 roadster. One of the main competitors of Mercedes-Benz in the 1930s, Horch attained the pinnacle of design and performance with the 855, of which less than 10 examples were ever produced. The car went on to become a celebrity in its own right. It was purchased by Purcell Ingram, proprietor of the Kings of the Road Museum, and was the subject of a magazine article. In the 1950s the Horch 855 took to the silver screen, making a notable appearance in the 1959 film ‘The World Is Ours’, with legendary star Rock Hudson behind the wheel.

The fourth most expensive sale, at a little over $1.3 million, was a Lamborghini Miura P400 from 1968. Considered the predecessor to the modern supercar, the Miura is a vehicle that any collector would be proud to own. This particular vehicle had been in the Junkyard for at least 46 years and was considered to be lost, making it a prized find indeed. It retains its matching-numbers V12 engine and its original coachwork, so it can be restored to a condition that is practically new. 
Collectors had often speculated about what Rudi Klein’s collection ultimately amounted to and it’s safe to say that they were not disappointed. We can only wonder at what other hidden gems might lie in wait in the private garages of other contemporary collectors. Top Supercars at the RM Sotheby’s Dubai Auction

In March 2024, RM Sotheby’s hosted its inaugural Dubai auction at arts and events hub Alserkal Avenue. The sale was a tremendous success, with a beautiful selection of vehicles and automotive memorabilia changing hands.

Dubai’s passion for supercars is evident as you drive along the city’s highways - it is commonplace to see luxury cars cruising alongside the usual crowds of commuters. In March 2024, RM Sotheby’s hosted its inaugural Dubai auction at arts and events hub Alserkal Avenue. This is no mere supercar - the Valkyrie is considered to be the first street-legal ‘hypercar’ produced by Aston Martin. It is one out of 150 models produced and was designed with airspace-grade technology under the aptly chosen codename ‘Nebula’. Finished in Lunar White with red and black detailing, the Valkyrie was delivered in October 2022 after 7 painstaking years of work. This involved reconsidering the airflow around the car to maximise aerodynamics instead of adding devices or elements that would detract from its look. The result is a vehicle that can achieve over 3.5 G around high-speed corners, which is over 3 times what a conventional racer can manage. The body of the Valkyrie is all carbon fibre, with a 6.5-litre V12 by Cosworth that gets additional support from a Rimac electric motor for a total of 1,160 horsepower. It also has the world’s smallest and brightest rear brake light, and a uniquely sleek windshield wiper provided by the same supplier as the Space Shuttle programme. The Valkyrie is being sold by its original owner and has only 109 kilometres recorded on its odometer. It would be the crowning glory of any sports car collection.

This very rare car is one of only 20 Senna LM models that were produced to commemorate McLaren’s victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995. The F1 GTR was such a notable presence at the race that McLaren commissioned road-legal versions of the model, known as F1 LM. Only six chassis were ever produced. To mark the silver jubilee of the race,a special edition model was developed, taking the twin turbocharged V8 of the GTR racer and modifying it to generate an additional 25 horsepower (for a total of 814). Original supplier OZ Racing provided five-spoke wheels that matched the look of the original F1 GTR, and this is one of seven cars finished in Papaya Orange to evoke the XP1 - McLaren’s most famous LM prototype. The car has only had a single owner, who has put it up for auction. This is an incredible opportunity to own a car with a rich backstory behind it and a rare and iconic colour scheme.

The fifth vehicle in AMG’s Black Series, this model is a modern interpretation of the iconic 300 SL Gullwing and has the most powerful naturally aspirated eight-cylinder engine when it was first released. Only 350 units were produced, but this vehicle has an even rarer mark of distinction - it is the only example to be finished in Designo Mystic Blue. The colour fits it so perfectly that other Black Series owners have had their cars repainted to match it, but this is the original and the only one of its kind. The upholstery has also been finished in dark blue and there are multiple carbon fibre elements, as well as a Bang &amp; Olufsen sound system and a rear-view camera. The car was originally delivered to a customer in Germany in 2013 and has spent precious little time on the road, with an odometer reading of just 326 kilometres. This is a highly desirable addition to and supercar collection on account of its unique (and original) finish alone.

Unveiled in the early 2000s, Aston Martin’s VH platform would form the basis for all models produced until around 2016. The second generation of the Vanquish tourer was built on this platform, with four stylish carbon fibre designs created by the renowned coachbuilder Zagato. The Shooting Brake became the most popular of the designs, featuring an elongated passenger compartment, raised ‘Z’ designs on the grille and rear mesh, and blade-like rear lights. It used the powertrain of the Vanquish S, with a naturally aspirated V12 capable of delivering 584 horsepower. The vehicle offered here is one of only 99 models produced and was finished in Lava Red, which was the colour of the launch editions.This is also a single-ownership vehicle that has spent the majority of its time as part of a South Korean collection. It is a stunning showcase of Aston Martin and of Zagato’s craftsmanship.

One of the rare vintage models that is up for auction, this was one of Lamborghini’s initial forays into a 2+2 seating model, officially unveiled at Geneva in 1966. There are several aesthetic changes made to the vehicle from previous models, including a larger rear luggage compartment, increased fuel capacity, and four headlights. The most significant change was a technical one, replacing the standard gearbox of the older 350 and 400 GT models with a five-speed unit specially designed by Lamborghini. However, it maintained the fantastic performance specs of its predecessors. Originally delivered in California, the car found its way to a private collection and was auctioned in Germany in 1992, following which it was sold to its current owner in 2022 at a Paris auction. The original Grigorio St. Vincent finish was replaced with the present silver exterior and black interior. Some touchups are required and a mechanical inspection will need to be conducted, but this is a timeless piece that any collector would be proud to own.

The three pieces available from Bessette-Kennedy were gifted to her close friend, RoseMarie Terenzio, who was John F. Kennedy Jr.’s executive assistant, publicist, and one of the couple’s closest confidantes during the 1990s. Each garment is reminiscent of the late It Girl’s refined taste, generosity, and timeless appeal. The pieces of clothing from Bessette-Kennedy’s wardrobe are going up for auction and will be on view to the public in Sotheby’s York Avenue Galleries on the Upper East Side of Manhattan from the 5th to 10th of December. The online Fashion Icons Auction opens for bidding in the last week of November and runs until December 17th. 
The pieces aren’t only beautiful but steeped in history. The auction debuts with a Prada single-breasted black wool coat Carolyn wore to Bill Clinton's 1997 inauguration, followed by a vintage faux-leopard fur coat, unlabelled, circa 1969. A Yohji Yamamoto black wool jacket she wore to the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Medal event in 1997 is favoured of all three pieces and the most anticipated in the sale event. The exceptional pieces were worn in front of some of America’s most notable and influential figures of the past century.&nbsp; 
The Yohji Yamamoto Black Wool Double-Breasted Jacket from 1997, estimated to fetch $20,000, is set to be the focal point of the auction. Distinguished by its padded hips, tailored waist, and self-covered buttons, the coat is emblematic of the designer’s structured sophistication. Bessette-Kennedy’s admiration for Yamamoto is well-documented, and her numerous appearances wearing his pieces remained some of her most copied looks. 
She wore this jacket, paired with a similar skirt while attending the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Medal ceremony – honouring Robert De Niro at the Municipal Art Society in New York in March 1997 – with her husband, John F. Kennedy Jr at her side. 
Having been a favourite of Carolyn's, the Prada-Labelled Black Wool Single-Breasted Coat with Belt is believed to be from the Prada Autumn-Winter 1996-97 collection and is expected to fetch around $20,000. A sleek silhouette reminiscent of 1960s-70s design, this coat is one of several variations, such as beige and red tweed, that Bessette-Kennedy was known for wearing. 
The Vintage Faux-Leopard Printed Double-Breasted Coat from circa 1969, estimated at $30,000, is one of two leopard print coats Bessette-Kennedy owned. Given that the leopard print trend has seen a resurgence in the Fall 2024 fashion month, the piece is evocative of its era yet stands as a fashion emblem ahead of its time.

Last October, Sotheby’s Royal &amp; Noble Jewels Highlights tour travelled the world over and dazzled Middle Eastern audiences with pieces of royal and noble provenance. Before reaching Dubai’s sandy shores the exhibition was showcased across some of the most luxurious cities on earth, including Hong Kong and New York. &nbsp;The tour concluded in Geneva ahead of the Sotheby’s auction on 11th November. These precious jewels are all laden with history having previously been housed in aristocratic houses. The event continues to reinforce Sotheby's legacy of offering highly important Royal collections, as illustrated by the Bourbon-Parma sales in November 2018, where Marie-Antoinette’s jewels yielded £40,421,770. One piece alone – a special pearl owned by the Queen – broke the world record with a natural pearl sold at auction for £27,654,085.&nbsp; 
History recalls that when Queen Marie Antoinette knew her capture was imminent, she sent her precious jewels in a trunk to Brussels. From there, the jewels made their way to Vienna, where the Austrian emperor, Marie Antoinette’s nephew, safeguarded them. In 1795, he returned the collection to the queen’s daughter, Madame Royale. The pieces later became part of the Bourbon Parma family’s collection, which eventually brought them to auction at Sotheby’s. 
The auction in Geneva replicated the tremendous figures previously attained by Sotheby’s; the pièce de résistance, which people came from far and wide to see, is an 18th-century jewel formerly in the collection of the Marquess of Anglesey. 
Rounding off the auction was an extensive selection of jewellery from a noble collection that brings together a dazzling ensemble of pieces from the 19th century onwards.

A piece as rare as a sparkling diamond itself is a flawless late 18th-century piece that weighs approximately 300 carats and made its first public appearance in fifty years. Formerly part of the Collection of the Marquess of Anglesey, the necklace sold for a staggering £3,800,000. 
The precise origins of the piece remain a mystery, adding to the enduring allure although it is believed to have been crafted just before the French Revolution. In 1937, Marjorie Paget, Marchioness of Anglesey, wore the piece to the coronation of King George VI, a moment immortalised in a portrait by famous photographer Cecil Beaton. Sixteen years later, in 1953, her daughter-in-law donned the same heirloom jewels for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. 
A diamond this rare deserves to have a life drenched in adventures and outings as rare and exquisite as the precious gem itself. The necklace features a pair of old cushion-shaped diamond tassels, connected by three rows of collet-set old cushion-shaped and circular-cut diamonds, with a total length of approximately 670mm. This rare and historic piece was on display in major cities, as part of the global tour and wrapped up the Royal and Noble Jewels live auction at Sotheby’s Geneva on 11 November.

It was once more displayed in 1979 at the American Museum of Natural History’s Bicentennial Exhibition. At the time, stories circulated which claimed that the piece had been crafted in 1776 by Collingwood Jeweller and that it was a gift from George III to the Duchess of Marlborough; while the exact origins may be disputed, its staggering beauty is not.

Another impressive offering is a ruby and diamond heart parure which she purchased during a stopover in Thailand en route to her first concert in Australia. The auction features over 70 pieces presenting a range of gems including rubies, sapphires, and diamonds, and expects to raise an impressive amount of money for charity. The auction also includes a diamond necklace, expected to fetch between £232,420 and £275,460, and a Cartier diamond and gold parure, estimated at&nbsp; £215,210. Additionally, a yellow diamond ring is anticipated to fetch £172,150 alongside an aquamarine, sapphire, diamond, and gem set estimated between £51,640 and £60,250.

Bassey’s stellar career has gone from strength to strength which is exemplified by the fact she is now in her eighth decade in the spotlight. Her God-given talent, ability to connect with her audience and endless charisma have connected her with people of different generations from all across the globe.
