<h2>Ferrari in the United States of America</h2> 
The Ferrari 250 LM was a significant fixture in the history of the North American Racing Team (NART), a league founded and led by renowned Italian racecar driver, Luigi Chinetti. Chinetti’s journey and Ferrari’s growth in America are inextricably linked, for it was his role as Ferrari’s North American ambassador that significantly contributed to the marque’s popularity. 
Chinetti trained as a mechanic in his father’s workshop before he joined Alfa Romeo at the age of 16. Here, he met Enzo Ferrari, who was a young racing driver at the time. The two young men fostered a bond that would last a lifetime, and alter the course of their respective careers. 
In the 1930s, Chinetti established his prominence in the racing niche by participating in every 24 Hours of Le Mans race from 1932 to 1953 and securing wins for Alfa Romeo in 1932 and 1933. His most pivotal achievement was in 1949, when he delivered Ferrari’s first-ever Le Mans victory. With remarkable flair, he drove the iconic 166 MM for almost 23 hours of the race – this carved out Chinneti’s space in motorsport history and demonstrated Ferrari’s extraordinary mettle. 
Chinetti became an American citizen in 1950, having emigrated to the country after World War II, and was the earliest North American importer for Ferrari. Initially operating out of New York, he eventually moved to Greenwich, Connecticut. His dealership beautifully captured Ferrari’s unique allure, as his influence extended far beyond sales – after all, he was an esteemed maestro of the racing craft. These milestones eventually led to Chinneti founding NART in 1957, which became a crucial partner in Scuderia Ferrari’s operations, effectively earning the brand precious World Championship points in North America. 
NART garnered tremendous success by competing in several notable races, including the 24 Hours of Daytona, the United States Grand Prix, and even Le Mans. Over the course of 25 years, the team showcased a record 70 Ferraris at the Le Mans races, more than any other team besides Scuderia Ferrari itself. The crown jewel of these impressive models was none other than the Ferrari 250 LM.

<h2>A Le Mans Star</h2> 
Unveiled at the 1963 Paris Salon, the 250 LM represented a seismic revolution in Ferrari’s engineering. Designed by Pininfarina and built by Scaglietti, it was the first-ever Ferrari GT to have a mid-engine layout, a configuration that showed immense promise in Ferrari’s Formula 1 cars. Performance was optimised to its highest potential by pairing advanced aerodynamics with a powerful V12 engine. Significantly still, the engine was updated from a 3.0-litre model to a 3.3-litre one. 
Notwithstanding its capabilities, the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) refused to approve it as a GT-class car and categorised it as a prototype, thereby restricting its opportunities in the racing arena. A discontented Enzo Ferrari passed the car on to private owners like NART, who recognised its potential. 
In 1956, the 250 LM took the racing world by storm with its staggering victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Fielded by NART, the car was driven by American Masten Gregory and Austrian Jochen Rindt. It outperformed much more modernised prototypes, including entries by Ford and even Ferrari’s own team. While mechanical difficulties weighed down other cars, the NART 250 LM (chassis number 5893) topped the leaderboard by securing a five-lap victory, followed by yet another 250 LM. 
This success was noteworthy on several counts. It was not only the first time a privateer-entered Ferrari had won the Le Mans but also marked Ferrari’s sixth consecutive win at the prestigious race. Interestingly, this would be Ferrari’s last overall win at Le Mans for 58 years, a spell broken by the 499P in 2023.

<h2>A Glorious Career</h2> 
Chassis 5893’s historic win at the 1956 Le Mans marked the beginning of a highly illustrious racing career. In 1966, the car competed at the inaugural 24 Hours of Daytona and came in 9th place overall. 1968 proved to be a difficult year for the 250 LM, as it was retired in two consecutive races due to accidents. However, it proved to be incredibly resilient, as it returned to the 1969 Le Mans and secured an impressive 8th place overall – a momentous achievement for a five-year-old race car. 
The 250 LM had a memorable send-off in the 1970 24 Hours of Daytona, where it climbed from a 44th-place start to a 7th-place overall finish – this performance in particular established its legacy as one of Ferrari’s most eminent race cars.

The car has its bona fide parts, including its engine and gearbox. The West End trophy home was listed at £22.5 million and was handled by Sarah Peck and Zach Madison in collaboration with Lanesborough Advisory, a Mayfair-based boutique advisory service. 

The buyers exchanged contracts over the rare, mixed-use property just before the announcement of the Budget, a time when most buyers were adopting a wait-and-see approach.&nbsp; 
About the sale, Sales Director of UK SIR Zach Madison commented, “The record-high sale, which took place right before the Budget, goes to show the remarkable resilience of London’s prime real estate market. In spite of the economic uncertainty, the buyer clearly recognised the value of this truly rare property, and I'm happy that we were able to secure the deal speedily and at a record price.” 
“It is incredible that the buyers were quick to secure such a prime property, in spite of an impending Budget and potential tax hikes. Given that this is a pricing record, it is great news for Prime Central London’s property market,” shared Sarah Peck, Sales Director of UK SIR.

<h2>Patek Philippe Ref 3970</h2> 
Among the highlights is the Patek Philippe Ref. 3970 E ‘Third Series,’ a yellow gold perpetual calendar chronograph wristwatch with moon phases, leap year, and 24-hour indications. Estimated at $120,000, this is a definitive collector’s piece and one of Patek Philippe’s most celebrated designs. The 3970 combines aesthetic balance with technical precision. Its 18k yellow gold case and silvered dial house a traditional layout of three subsidiary dials: a leap year indicator and 30-minute chronograph totalizer at three o’clock, a moonphase and date at six o’clock, and a 12-hour chronograph totalizer with running seconds at nine o’clock. The “E” in its name stands for étanche – French for waterproof – giving this classic a practical edge. 
Crafted in white, yellow, and rose gold, as well as platinum, the 3970 bridges Patek’s heritage with modern watchmaking. This particular watch comes with its presentation box, Certificate of Origin, and operating instructions, offering a complete package for collectors. 
 
<h2>Paul Newman Panda Daytona Rolex</h2> 
A highlight of the auction is the Paul Newman Panda Daytona, a stainless steel chronograph wristwatch with a tropical minute outer track and bracelet, dated 1969. Estimated at $400,000, this reference 6263 has become one of the most admired models among Rolex collectors. Known for its white dial with black subdials, this "Panda" variant stands out for its striking colour contrast. Over time, subtle variations appeared in the Paul Newman Daytona, but this particular example showcases the desirable Mk 1.5 dial, along with its original pushers and bezel insert, enhancing its appeal and value. Consigned by its original owner, the watch bears the unmistakable legacy of Rolex craftsmanship. 
 
<h2>One of Horology’s Most Important Watches</h2> 
The F.P. Journe Chronomètre à Résonance, a platinum dual time wristwatch with power reserve indication and brass movement, is another exceptional piece in the sale. Expected to fetch $300,000, it represents a milestone in horology. Introduced in 2000, it was the first resonance wristwatch and the first resonance timepiece since Breguet. Mechanical resonance occurs when two oscillators with matching frequencies synchronise through mechanical coupling, an effect initially observed in pendulum clocks. This innovation makes the Chronomètre à Résonance an important achievement in modern watchmaking. 
 
<h2>Reference 431 Big Pilot</h2> 
Dating back to 1940, the IWC Reference 431 is an oversized stainless steel pilot’s wristwatch made for the German Air Force. Estimated at $20,000, it reflects the evolution of aviation watches during a transformative era in history. Few pilot watches hold such significance, and this piece retains its status with a Certificate of Authenticity confirming its delivery date of November 20, 1940, and service papers from December 2013. The Biltmore Resort, also known as the ‘Jewel of the Desert,’ is a highly sought-after holiday retreat in Arizona, steeped in old Hollywood glamour. <h2>1931 Bentley 8-Litre Convertible Victoria by Murphy&nbsp;</h2> 
This car bears the distinction of being the only eight-litre Bentley that had been customised by an American coachbuilder. This was during an era when Bentleys were hardly found outside of Europe, unless shipped abroad by migrating owners. 
This vehicle belonged to Conrad H. Matthiessen Jr., heir to the Sugar Trust empire, America’s largest company in the sugar refining industry. In February 1931, he had it delivered to the most famous coachbuilder in the West Coast, Walter H. Murphy. Here the body was created by Franklin Q. Hershey, who would later gain renown for the iconic 1955 Ford Thunderbird. He crafted an imposing yet lightweight chassis, characterised by sweeping curves and a clean silhouette, resulting in a sleek and sporty vehicle. 
Eventually, the car made its way to Mexico from Matthiessen’s garage, where it underwent significant changes. It was outfitted with Mercedes wheels and a truck engine – fortunately, the original engine still accompanied it. 
In 1971, Bentley connoisseur Don Weber acquired the car and sent it to Hofmann &amp; Mountfort in the United Kingdom for extensive restoration. The bona fide engine was reincorporated. Interestingly, one of the original hammered door handles was replaced by a former employee of Murphy’s, who used the same hammer that was used for the original handles. After gaining much fanfare in the United Kingdom, it was shipped back to Weber in the United States. It remained in his custody until 1986, following which it passed on from one collector to another in the West Coast. 
The present owner acquired the car in 2012 and had it restored by R.C. Moss of Bedford, England. Every single component was restored to its factory specifications. Additionally, the original livery was reapplied along with detailwork such as the mother of pearl accents and the embossed leather upholstery. The report unpacks the full restoration in detail. The car also comes with the original owner’s manual and a tool kit.&nbsp; 
This vehicle has an immensely intriguing legacy– it is one of 100 original 8-litre models, one of only 13 surviving examples, and the sole “American” Bentley. Indeed, this rare gem is sure to elevate any classic motorcade.

<h2>1939 Bugatti Type 57 C Atalante by Gangloff</h2>

A successor to the popular Type 49, the Type 57C underwent several upgrades, such as the incorporation of hydraulic brakes by Lockheed, the reinforced chassis, and the strengthened rear axle. It was also armed with an optional supercharged engine that produced more than 160 horsepower, leaps beyond the standard Type 57. 
The Atalante was a handsome two-seater sports coupe created by Jean Bugatti. Only 33 units were produced, with an additional 17 built on the Type 57 S chassis, and were twice as expensive as typical factory models. This particular Type 57 C was specially made to order in 1939, when the Atalante had already been retired and Bugatti was more focused on the Galibier saloon. Built by renowned coachbuilder Gangloff, it was one of the most expensive Bugattis produced that year. As a Type 57 C with the supercharged engine, it was and still is truly one-of-a-kind. 
The special Type 57 C was delivered to a buyer in Algeria, where it remained throughout World War II and had its registration renewed. It then made its way to Paris, where it was reworked before being sold to an individual who used it until 1977. After this, Hervé Charbonneaux, son of a renowned automobile collector and museum curator, acquired the vehicle to incorporate it into the Charbonneaux Museum. From 1980 to 1981, the car was restored to its original colours and fitted with a new cylinder block.&nbsp; 
The car was sold again in 1996 and was passed through several owners before it was acquired by Los Angeles’ Petersen Automotive Museum in 2006. It has since been a pivotal exhibit at the museum for over 14 years. Fortunately, it is in exemplary condition and shows promise for new restoration. Utterly unique in its conception and steeped in rich history, this Type 57 C is a dream for Bugatti enthusiasts.

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing continues to enamour and enchant automobile aficionados worldwide, as evidenced by the fanfare the vehicle deservedly received at the RM Sotheby’s ‘Junkyard’ auction in October 2024 – this dust-caked Gullwing that had been tucked away in the Rudi Klein Collection for decades commanded a staggering $9.35 million. The acclaim is hardly a mystery, given the Gullwing’s engineering prowess, sculpted silhouette, and awe-worthy track performance. 
&nbsp;This particular 300 SL Gullwing was ordered for a buyer stationed in Berlin with the US Army in 1956. The car has competition-level upgrades, such as sports suspension, an upgraded racing engine, and five Rudge wheels. The interiors are clad in black leather and red gabardine fabric with Fire Engine Red hues. It remained in Berlin for a while before arriving in California during the 1960s. It was later held by another individual who kept it until the 1990s, after which it was acquired by the present consignor. 
The car was completely disassembled and restored from scratch. Now, it is in excellent condition, armed with most of its original parts and some meticulously made replacements. There’s little doubt that the Gullwing is one of the most aspirational collectible sports cars in the world; this immaculately restored beauty, with its impressive upgrades and gorgeous colours, will be an invaluable addition to any collector's fleet.

The Fashion Collection of Sydell Miller Arrives in Sotheby’s New York

Another remarkable Sotheby’s online auction is underway, bringing to light the private treasures of a refined lady who transformed the beauty industry – Sydell Miller.

Miller is well known for surrounding herself with and living a life of beauty – both inside and out. A pioneering business woman and entrepreneur, Miller was famous for her influence, drive, and passion – all of which she successfully transformed into a business that has gone on to impact the lives of millions worldwide. In keeping with the Millers’ commitment to “total beauty”, Sydell created the day spa concept, spearheading the movement among salons to offer a total one-stop beauty experience known as “Total Image Consulting”. While the pursuit of beauty is perhaps what first comes to mind when thinking of Miller, she was also a generous philanthropist and supporter of the arts. Alongside her business endeavours she served on the boards of the American Cancer Society of Palm Beach. She owned artworks by Picasso, Chagall, Giacometti, and Lichtenstein, and in 2019 set the record for the most expensive oceanfront home sold in Palm Beach County when her villa – La Rêverie – sold for $111 million.&nbsp; Miller was dubbed one of the “Top 50 Women Business Owners in America,” and honoured with induction into the National Cosmetology Hall of Fame before she passed away on February 25th, 2024 at the age of 86.

This age-old tradition continues into the 21st century with Sotheby’s latest online auction which is showcasing the treasures of the woman who transformed the beauty industry, Sydell Miller. A select few will have the opportunity to own a piece of Sydell’s impressive collection and owning a piece of history from the woman who was dubbed ‘The Queen of the Beauty Industry’.&nbsp; Sydell Miller is the founder of two dominant brands which she created together with her husband, Arnold Miller. The first brand, Ardell, became the industry standard for eyelash services, and the second brand, Matrix Essentials, has often been described as the nation’s largest manufacturer of professional hair and beauty products. Over seven million people use Matrix products each week.&nbsp; This November, in New York, one of the style capitals of the world, Sotheby’s will auction pieces from her extensive collection which includes: Chanel haute couture pieces, luxury handbags, including the iconic Hermes Kelly bag, as well as items from Louis Vuitton and Dior. These rare and exquisite pieces provide an exclusive opportunity to own some of the finest fares in fashion.

Beyond hosting the American magnate’s fashion collection at the upcoming New York auction, Sotheby’s has also taken the lead in organising other ‘Sydell Miller events’. With a total of three dedicated online sales throughout November and December celebrating and showcasing the full breadth of Miller’s collecting pursuits, Sotheby’s will auction a range of ‘objets d’art’ including paintings by Monet and Picasso, furniture, and jewellery. Her expansive art collection alone is expected to fetch around $200million; the collection includes Claude Monet’s Nymphéas (1914-17), which is estimated to sell for around $60m.&nbsp; A Picasso painting called La Statuaire (1925) is estimated to sell in the region of $30m.

Sydell Miller is known for her groundbreaking work, founding and leading two successful companies, but her fashion collection is a further testament to Miller’s deep appreciation for beauty. A lifelong fashion connoisseur, Sydell’s initial venture into the fashion business began with the opening of Tops &amp; Bottoms, a women’s fashion boutique above her husband’s hairdressing salon.&nbsp; Amongst the pieces available in the auction will be pieces from Chanel. He eloquently enthused: “It’s amazing that she’s not more of a household name, considering what a dramatic impact she had on revolutionising the beauty industry and inventing components of it…. What she accomplished as a philanthropist, collector, mother, and grandmother… The impact and the legacy she leaves.
