<h2>The creative rebirth of a modern master</h2>
Picasso was already 65 years old by the time he first entered the atelier of Madoura Pottery. Nestled among the olive groves and citrus trees of France’s glittering south coast, the idyllic commune of Vallauris provided the backdrop for a focal shift. At this point, Picasso had produced around 40,000 works of art and become the most famous living artist in the world.
Vallauris was known for its pottery pedigree. However, the terracotta-toned houses and sun-drenched squares belied the fact that its kilns were cold. Europe was only just beginning to recover from World War II and pottery wasn’t a priority.
Nonetheless, isolated from the residual horrors of conflict, Picasso was able to concentrate on a new creative venture. He toured the studio, met owners Georges and Suzanne Ramié and learned about the craft. During what many assumed was the December of his career, he then set about starting a project that would consume the next 25 years of his life.

<h2>Life and legend, expressed in clay</h2>
Picasso’s ceramics era allowed him to push his creativity further. His works include plates, jugs, vases and tiles as well as sculptural pieces. He would embellish these pieces with sgraffito, carving or painting, often with imagery inspired by nature and mythology. His “visage” plates feature numerous stylised faces, sometimes using bold, abstract lines inspired by his earlier cubist works.
Picasso painted many pieces with marine motifs or bull-and-faun designs and created jugs that resemble human heads. Inspired by an injured owl that he nursed back to health, he also produced many vases shaped and painted to resemble his pet.

<h2>Picasso’s standout ceramic works</h2>
Executed around 1947, Cabri is a sculptural ceramic vase painted to depict a baby goat. It was sold by Sotheby’s in a white glove auction in 2015 for £485,000, over four times its pre-sale low estimate. Vase positif négatif is a sizable jug with a section cut out to resemble the silhouette of a vase. Painted and partially glazed, this unique piece was sold by Sotheby’s for £365,000, exceeding its high estimate.
Other examples have achieved even greater final selling prices. Crafted in 1950, the prototype for his Grand Vase aux Femmes Voilées line sold for more than £1.1m, while in 2013, a subsequent example fetched £735,650. Pictured above, the eye-catching piece Visage aux Yeux Rieurs (A. R. 608) was also sold by Sotheby’s for £50,800.

Picasso continued to create ceramic works up until his death in 1973. This long final chapter produced a distinctly corporial body of work, comprising around 4,000 items, and secured a renowned reputation that will outlast the majority of 20th-century greats. <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auction/2025/fashion-icons-pf2583?locale=en">The Original Birkin model is an icon in its purest form</a> – unspoiled and entirely itself. It was created in 1984 in collaboration with Jane Birkin, a British and French actress. While other Birkin creations vary across their sizes, hues, and leathers, this unique prototype is distinguished by seven design elements that render its status symbol as the very genesis of the world’s most coveted bag.
Slightly taller and broader than the Birkins that followed, its proportions are practical, with a height of just under 14 inches and a depth of just under 16 inches. The strap is fixed, and the hardware is made of humble brass. The zipper is sourced from another maker, and the bottom studs are smaller on this prototype than those used by Hermès to manufacture the commercialised Birkin bags.&nbsp;
Presented in the exact condition it was last used by Jane, The Original Birkin wears the scars of age and use gracefully. It is branded with her initials – J.B. – and the Original Certificate of the Charity auction signed by Jane Birkin on 5 October 1994 is also included.
The Original Birkin has travelled around the world – it was displayed under glass at MoMA in New York and then shown at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. In October 2024, it was on display at Sotheby’s Paris and Sotheby’s Maison in Hong Kong, where thousands came to marvel at it.

<h2>A Serendipitous Meeting</h2>
The Birkin's origins are tied to a chance encounter that’s now famed and fabled in fashion history. Jane Birkin and then Hermès artistic director Jean-Louis Dumas struck up a conversation on a flight, during which Jane confessed that she struggled to find a bag that could hold all her daily essentials.&nbsp;
Upon hearing this predicament, Dumas offered to create the perfect bag for her. Sketched on an airsickness packet, the two designed a bold yet functional bag, which would disrupt the luxury fashion industry – a smaller version of the Hermès Haut à Courroies sac, the tote-style beauty featured two sturdy handles.
When the sketch was brought to life, Hermès offered Jane Birkin the bag and asked if the model could be named after her.&nbsp;

Jane Birkin died in July 2023, a proud owner of five Birkin bags, all of which were gifted to her. One of her Birkins sold for $160,000 at a 2021 auction – five times its pre-sale estimate.

This magnificent manor house speaks of prestige and pedigree. However, originally a gift for the Duke of Buckingham’s mistress, the estate has a history of wealth, royalty and scandal. 
 
Nonetheless, the appearance of this imposing country home belies its colourful past and creates a striking backdrop for a distinguished event on 8 July 2025. From classic cars to supercars, the auction will feature an array of marques covering several decades. Included in the lineup is a selection of vehicles from one of Britain’s finest carmakers. Below, we explore a trio of genre-defining Aston Martins that continue to turn heads to this day.

<h2>1957 Aston Martin DB4 Prototype ‘DP114/2’</h2> 
In pursuit of a prototype that would eventually supersede the Mark III, a vehicle dubbed the DP114 was created in 1956. It was scrapped after testing but led to the 1957 prototype DP114/2, offered here. The chassis was designed by Aston Martin engineer Harold Beach, with bodywork styled by in-house designer Frank Feeley. 
Aston Martin sought advice from Touring Superleggera, who recommended that the body shell be stiffened. Touring Superleggera later stepped back, having insisted that a platform chassis be devised. What was effectively a discontinued project produced a car as rare as it is beautiful. 
A one-of-a-kind coupé, the DP114/2 became the personal car of Mrs Brown, wife of famed Aston Martin Lagonda’s chairman David Brown. The vehicle was painstakingly restored over two years in the late 1970s and was later converted for competition use. It competed in several races and won the First Pirelli Classic Marathon and Bridgend Ford Directors Rally Stages in 1988. 
Over five years and to exacting standards, the DP114/2 was then recommissioned by Aston Martin Works. Having since been featured in car shows, magazine spreads and on the BBC’s Top Gear, the vehicle underwent a further £35,000 restoration project in 2005 to provide its Almond Green colour with a Fern Green leather interior. A storied sports car, this vehicle represents a rare opportunity to own the only DB4 factory prototype of its kind.&nbsp;

<h2>2017 Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Coupé</h2> 
The Vanquish Zagato Coupé is more junior than the majority of its peers at the RM Sotheby’s Auction. However, what it lacks in provenance and posterity, it makes up for in prowess and power. Launched in 2016 on the shores of Lake Como at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, this version of the ubiquitous Vanquish was masterminded by Italian car designers Zagato. 
The Vanquish had deftly paired the comfort of a luxury sedan with the brute force of a supercar. Zagato reimagined the Vanquish as understated yet arresting. Just 99 Zagato Coupés were produced. The exterior styling was pared back but distinctive. On the uppermost panel, Zagato’s signature “double bubble” design was originally conceived to allow for helmet clearance without raising the roofline. Gold detailing adds a sense of contemporary grandeur while, to the rear, sleek lines are emphasised by “bladed” LED taillights. 
The sonorous church organ of an engine is a 5.9-litre naturally aspirated V12. Producing 592 brake horsepower at 6,550 rpm, the powertrain enables the car to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in approximately 3.5 seconds and achieve a top speed of almost 200 mph. 
Constructed at Aston Martin’s factory in Warwickshire, this example from February 2017 wears Scorching Black paintwork. A Pure Black interior is enlivened with embroidered Zagato motifs, quilted seats and full-length herringbone facia trim. This particular Zagato Coupé also benefits from the Villa d’Este package, an option with a cost exceeding £16,000. A boxfresh specimen with just 1,768 miles on the clock at the time of cataloguing, the vehicle benefits from Aston Martin main dealer servicing with its most recent workshop visit completed as recently as January 2025.

<h2>1930 Aston Martin 1½-Litre International 2/4-Seater</h2> 
Both a relic of a bygone era and an icon of seminal automotive design, the International ushered in a new era for Aston Martin. The company was taken over by Augustus Bertelli and William S Renwick in 1925. The most successful launch from the Bertelli First Series, the International featured a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder engine. With previous homes in both Suffolk and Germany, the vehicle also made its way to Switzerland. Between 2006 and 2011, renowned Swiss firm Roos Engineering (now known as Emil Frey) completed a total mechanical overhaul, including a new engine block, in addition to bodywork repairs.

<h2>Lamborghini Miura P400 SV by Bertone&nbsp;</h2> 
With their farm machinery heritage, Lamborghini certainly aren’t strangers to power. The Miura P400 was arguably the world’s first supercar. It cut a futuristic figure, with head-turning lines and a monstrous 380-horsepower engine that produced a screaming 7,850 rpm. With the Miura P400, Lamborghini had significantly developed the concept and potential of the mid-engined sports car. The Motor tested a P400 in 1967, hitting a blistering 171 mph. The example on display in Milan this month is one of just 150 in the world. It benefits from the original “split-sump” configuration and is offered with no reserve.

<h2>Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Berlinetta by Scaglietti&nbsp;</h2> 
Leonardo Fioravanti is a living legend of Italian sports car design. Now 87, he led the Pininfarina design team that crafted some of Ferrari’s seminal supercars. The Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona was one such example. Enzo Ferrari had a famous distaste for mid-engined road cars. Even with the advent of the Lamborghini Miura, he persisted with front-engined designs. The 365 GTB/4 Daytona was a roaring success, with sharp styling, a considered interior and a 4.4-litre Colombo V-12 engine delivering 347 brake-horsepower. With a kerb weight of 1,200 kilograms, it could reach 174 mph, making it the world’s fastest production car at the time. However, it didn’t drive like the untamed beasts for which Ferrari had become known. It was as comfortable as a tourer as it was fast off the mark. The Milan auction includes a 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Berlinetta by Scaglietti. This European-specification supercar is finished in the quintessential Ferrari red.

<h2>Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary Edition by Bertone&nbsp;</h2> 
Starting with the Miura, Lamborghini held the record for the world’s fastest production car for over a decade. Its successor was the Countach. Immortalised by the LP400 S variant, with its enormous rear wing, the mould for the modern supercar had been set. The subsequent LP500 S increased the V-12’s displacement to 4.8 litres, producing 370 brake-horsepower. Auto Moto und Sport put the LP500 S through its paces via a test in which it achieved 182 mph, setting a new record. The later LP5000 QV model had a gargantuan 5.4-litre engine with four valves per cylinder. Producing a staggering 449 brake-horsepower, Fast Lane magazine tested it to just more than 190 mph. Made available via this month’s auction is a further refined version of the 5000 QV, the 1989 Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary Edition by Bertone.

The proposed successor of the 911 Turbo, Porsche’s 959 “Speedster” pulsed with engineering prowess. Hugely expensive to manufacture, the 959 cost twice its sticker price to build and constituted a project that nearly killed the company. The result was a remarkable marque. Its features included a Kevlar body, active ride-height, sequential twin-turbochargers and hollow magnesium alloy wheels. The results speak for themselves. Road &amp; Track hit 197 mph in a Komfort version, while the Sport model achieved 198 mph – making it the world’s fastest car until the Ruf CTR soared past the 200 mph ceiling and achieved 212 mph at the Nardò Ring in 1988. An icon of speed and style, the 959 available via this month’s auction is a one-off creation built in the early 1990s.

For anyone who grew up in the 90s, the Ferrari F40 was the original supercar. Produced in extremely limited numbers and made to order, the Porsche 959 Sport and Ruf CTR pushed the boundaries of what could be considered a “road vehicle”. By comparison, the Ferrari F40 was so popular that 1,100 were built. Whether it was ever the fastest car in the world is hotly debated. However, reaching speeds of around 200 mph, it was blisteringly quick. While Porsche’s approach had been to incorporate technology, Ferrari combined aerodynamics with pure power and engineering. This pared-back yet ferocious supercar continues to be an icon of motoring. The event in Milan will feature a rare “non-cat, non-adjust” F40 which will be auctioned off to one very lucky collector.

Far from being a trailblazer, the Jaguar XJ220 was truly one-of-a-kind. With its spaceship-like body, this ambitious extracurricular project produced one of the most recognisable cars in history. The concept version featured four-wheel-drive and a mighty V-12 engine. However, amid an economic downturn, the production car featured a 3.5-litre V-6. With 524 brake-horsepower, Martin Brundle took the Jaguar to 217.1 mph at the Nardò Ring. It therefore took the title of the fastest production car in the world, though it did have its catalytic converters removed and the rev limit increased to 7,900 rpm. During an independent test by Road &amp; Track, the true production XJ220 reached 210.5 mph. Finished in Le Mans Blue over a Smoke Grey interior, the Jaguar XJ220 made available in this month’s auction in Milan is the 48th of just 281 examples in the world.

Arch Enemies: Ferrari and McLaren face off in RM Sotheby’s F1 auctions

Having raced against each other on the streets of Monaco in 2001, two stalwarts of F1 will go head-to-head this May. 

Soon after the turn of the millennium, a blistering street race underlined a rivalry that has come to define Formula One’s legacy. The Grand Prix de Monaco represents the pinnacle of theatre within the sport and in 2001, the event made an indelible mark on automotive history. 

British F1 legend David Coulthard faced off against German racing royalty Michael Schumacher in a race characterised by the intense competition between the respective teams. Helmed by Coulthard, the 2001 McLaren MP4-16 was going up against Schumacher’s Ferrari F2001. 
Backdropped by the gleaming yachts and sand-toned towers of Monte Carlo, Schumacher was victorious and secured his fourth win for that season. This was compounded by a win at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Schumacher would also earn the F1 Championship title, making it a truly unforgettable year for Ferrari. These two race-proven vehicles, which went head-to-head on the streets of Monte Carlo, are now available via upcoming RM Sotheby’s auctions. 
On 22 May 2025, an auction in Milan will decide the future of the McLaren MP4-16. The event will take place in the Fonderia Macchi Carlo – a former industrial building that has been converted into a grand events space. Having previously hosted fashion shows featuring works from the likes of Valentino and Gucci, it is an apt setting for the sleek lines of the F1 cars of yesteryear. The event will feature several additional standout lots including a 1932 Alfa Romeo by Pininfarina and a rare 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing. 
Two days later, on the eve of the Grand Prix de Monaco, a special event in Monte Carlo will feature an auction to determine the owner of the iconic Ferrari F2001. Below, we look at each of the two vehicles in more detail and consider their racing pedigree.

Finished in the iconic Rosso Corsa, the F2001 speaks to a bygone era of racing. This particular vehicle, chassis 211 of the F2001, is the only Ferrari driven by Schumacher to secure victory at the Monaco Grand Prix and the World Championship in the same season – cementing its place as the crown jewel among his F1 cars. 
Powered by a roaring V-10 engine capable of reaching a thunderous 17,000 rpm, the F2001 represents the peak of Formula 1’s most sonorous era. Ferrari’s engineering “super team” consisted of Jean Todt, Rory Byrne, Ross Brawn and, to some extent, Michael Schumacher himself.&nbsp; 
The 211 chassis was victorious at the 2001 Hungarian Grand Prix, where Schumacher sealed his fourth Drivers’ title and Ferrari captured the Constructors’ Championship. This earned back-to-back title doubles for the first time in the history of Scuderia Ferrari. 
In the 2001 Grand Prix de Monaco, Schumacher achieved such an extraordinary lead that he coasted through the final sector allowing teammate Rubens Barrichello to catch up – creating an iconic moment at the finish line and a true Scuderia statement. 
The embodiment of speed, power and finesse, this lot presents the opportunity to own the original red racecar. Recently remastered by Ferrari, this chassis is now presented in full running condition, ready for its next chapter in Corse Clienti or private collection use.

One of just seven cars built for the 2001 F1 season, the outstanding 16A-05 chassis of the McLaren MP4-16 was driven by 13-time Grand Prix winner David Coulthard. He was seen as the obvious challenger to Schumacher and outpaced his Finnish teammate Mika Häkkinen to complete his most decorated season. Of the 65 points he amassed, 24 were earned aboard chassis 16A-05. 
This vehicle was a standout in qualifying, scooping pole positions at both the San Marino and Monaco Grand Prix. Designed by Adrian Newey and Neil Oatley, it helped Coulthard conquer the 2001 Austrian Grand Prix with poise and precision. 
Despite having qualified in seventh position due to a rear instability caused by a headwind, an overcut strategy (waiting longer than Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello to pit) led to a victory over the Ferrari team with a lead of 2.2 seconds. A poignant win, the 2001 Austrian Grand Prix took place the day after the tragic death of Paul Morgan, the co-founder of Ilmor Engineering – the firm that worked with Mercedes-Benz to create the MP4-16’s 3-litre V-10 FO110K engine. 
The 16A-05 chassis recorded the fastest race laps in both Austria and Monaco, highlighting its power and agility on the sport’s toughest tracks. It was also driven by two-time World Champion Mika Häkkinen to a podium finish in Canada. It was later adapted to the MP4-16B specification for testing by F1 race winner Jean Alesi. Following its competitive career, the car remained in McLaren’s possession until 2020 when it was purchased by a private owner. The vehicle is offered in non-running condition and fitted with a display engine. The 16A-05 chassis MP4-16 represents a rare lot with considerable racing provenance.
