Arch Enemies: Ferrari and McLaren face off in RM Sotheby’s F1 auctions

Having raced against each other on the streets of Monaco in 2001, two stalwarts of F1 will go head-to-head this May. 

Soon after the turn of the millennium, a blistering street race underlined a rivalry that has come to define Formula One’s legacy. The Grand Prix de Monaco represents the pinnacle of theatre within the sport and in 2001, the event made an indelible mark on automotive history. 

British F1 legend David Coulthard faced off against German racing royalty Michael Schumacher in a race characterised by the intense competition between the respective teams. Helmed by Coulthard, the 2001 McLaren MP4-16 was going up against Schumacher’s Ferrari F2001. 
Backdropped by the gleaming yachts and sand-toned towers of Monte Carlo, Schumacher was victorious and secured his fourth win for that season. This was compounded by a win at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Schumacher would also earn the F1 Championship title, making it a truly unforgettable year for Ferrari. These two race-proven vehicles, which went head-to-head on the streets of Monte Carlo, are now available via upcoming RM Sotheby’s auctions. 
On 22 May 2025, an auction in Milan will decide the future of the McLaren MP4-16. The event will take place in the Fonderia Macchi Carlo – a former industrial building that has been converted into a grand events space. Having previously hosted fashion shows featuring works from the likes of Valentino and Gucci, it is an apt setting for the sleek lines of the F1 cars of yesteryear. The event will feature several additional standout lots including a 1932 Alfa Romeo by Pininfarina and a rare 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing. 
Two days later, on the eve of the Grand Prix de Monaco, a special event in Monte Carlo will feature an auction to determine the owner of the iconic Ferrari F2001. Below, we look at each of the two vehicles in more detail and consider their racing pedigree.

Finished in the iconic Rosso Corsa, the F2001 speaks to a bygone era of racing. This particular vehicle, chassis 211 of the F2001, is the only Ferrari driven by Schumacher to secure victory at the Monaco Grand Prix and the World Championship in the same season – cementing its place as the crown jewel among his F1 cars. 
Powered by a roaring V-10 engine capable of reaching a thunderous 17,000 rpm, the F2001 represents the peak of Formula 1’s most sonorous era. Ferrari’s engineering “super team” consisted of Jean Todt, Rory Byrne, Ross Brawn and, to some extent, Michael Schumacher himself.&nbsp; 
The 211 chassis was victorious at the 2001 Hungarian Grand Prix, where Schumacher sealed his fourth Drivers’ title and Ferrari captured the Constructors’ Championship. This earned back-to-back title doubles for the first time in the history of Scuderia Ferrari. 
In the 2001 Grand Prix de Monaco, Schumacher achieved such an extraordinary lead that he coasted through the final sector allowing teammate Rubens Barrichello to catch up – creating an iconic moment at the finish line and a true Scuderia statement. 
The embodiment of speed, power and finesse, this lot presents the opportunity to own the original red racecar. Recently remastered by Ferrari, this chassis is now presented in full running condition, ready for its next chapter in Corse Clienti or private collection use.

One of just seven cars built for the 2001 F1 season, the outstanding 16A-05 chassis of the McLaren MP4-16 was driven by 13-time Grand Prix winner David Coulthard. He was seen as the obvious challenger to Schumacher and outpaced his Finnish teammate Mika Häkkinen to complete his most decorated season. Of the 65 points he amassed, 24 were earned aboard chassis 16A-05. 
This vehicle was a standout in qualifying, scooping pole positions at both the San Marino and Monaco Grand Prix. Designed by Adrian Newey and Neil Oatley, it helped Coulthard conquer the 2001 Austrian Grand Prix with poise and precision. 
Despite having qualified in seventh position due to a rear instability caused by a headwind, an overcut strategy (waiting longer than Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello to pit) led to a victory over the Ferrari team with a lead of 2.2 seconds. A poignant win, the 2001 Austrian Grand Prix took place the day after the tragic death of Paul Morgan, the co-founder of Ilmor Engineering – the firm that worked with Mercedes-Benz to create the MP4-16’s 3-litre V-10 FO110K engine. 
The 16A-05 chassis recorded the fastest race laps in both Austria and Monaco, highlighting its power and agility on the sport’s toughest tracks. It was also driven by two-time World Champion Mika Häkkinen to a podium finish in Canada. It was later adapted to the MP4-16B specification for testing by F1 race winner Jean Alesi. Following its competitive career, the car remained in McLaren’s possession until 2020 when it was purchased by a private owner. The vehicle is offered in non-running condition and fitted with a display engine. The 16A-05 chassis MP4-16 represents a rare lot with considerable racing provenance.

In the heart of London, sighting the blue plaques that commemorate former residents becomes a more regular occurrence. In Belgravia, poet Alfred Tennysen, James Bond writer Ian Fleming and composer Amadeus Wolfgang Mozart all once lived on Ebury Street. 
 
In addition to its famous former residents, Ebury Street is also home to a successful change-of-use project. In July 2022, developer Residence One published plans to renovate a vacant hotel, reimagining it as a pair of homes. The restoration scheme and the change of use from C1 (hotel) to C3 (residential) were both approved. The development concluded with the completion of two turnkey properties that honour the provenance of their setting.

Unfolding across the upper floors, the generous three-bedroom triplex was purchased by fractional ownership platform Pacaso. The home celebrates its 19th-century framework with timeless design details and considered interventions. 
The reception room is characterised by large sash windows and a hand-carved marble fireplace. Walnut flooring flows into the kitchen, which pairs bespoke joinery with Miele appliances. Considered bedroom suites enjoy a neutral colour palette to produce a calming atmosphere. The principal bedroom dominates the second floor, incorporating a walk-in wardrobe and an en suite with a freestanding bathtub. 
The home also benefits from a private, ground-floor entrance. Beyond, the location offers proximity to Buckingham Palace Garden, St James’s Park and Victoria Station as well as the shops and cafes of Elizabeth Street. The unit unfolds over 1,439 sq ft and was marketed with a guide price of £3.5M. 
<h2 style="font-size: 30px;">A Seamless Sale </h2> 
As an industry-leading Prime Central London (PCL) brokerage, United Kingdom Sotheby’s International Realty was instructed on the property. Drawing upon an existing relationship, the apartment was shown to a corporate client. 
Joey Byrne, Head of Europe at Pacaso, was searching for a turnkey home with pristine finishes and a prestigious postcode. “United Kingdom Sotheby’s International Realty did an excellent job sourcing the right inventory and marketing it in the optimal way,” Joey recalls. “The home was spectacular.” The property was swiftly acquired by Pacaso via a smooth and straightforward sale. 
Pacaso is on track to spend £40M on property in London in 2025. However, this sale represented their first purchase of a home in Belgravia. “With our expert guidance, this buyer became well-versed in the neighbourhood and the local property market as well as the apartment and its investment potential,” explains Ahmed Ali, Sales Director at United Kingdom Sotheby’s International Realty.

<h2 style="font-size: 36px;">Fractional Ownership</h2> 
Founded by a former Zillow executive, Pacaso is a global co-ownership platform allowing users to purchase between one-eighth and one-half of a property. The corresponding days are then used on an annual cycle. The platform largely caters to American HNWIs (High Net Worth Individuals) who might otherwise frequent the city’s five-star hotels. 
The platform allows users to trade weeks with owners of other properties, including those in different countries. While still a high-consideration purchase, fractional ownership allows the user to opt for a swift process. “We deal with the management and remove all the friction,” explains Joey, who also states that scheduling issues are rare.

<h2 style="font-size: 36px;">Increasing American Interest</h2> 
Pacaso enables its users to buy a stake in a pied-à-terre and invest in a foreign property market. As the “Donald dash” has seen <a href="https://sothebysrealty.co.uk/the-journal/why-are-wealthy-americans-escaping-to-the-uk/">rising interest among US citizens in moving to the UK</a>, more American HNWIs are looking to buy property in London. However, many are simply looking to spend more time in the city. “They come to us so they can ‘rightsize’ their ownership,” Joey explains. 
In London, the platform’s users tend to be leisure clients with an existing connection to the city.&nbsp; Many work in the finance sector. The owner group for the Ebury Street apartment includes a private equity executive, a former hedge fund manager and a real estate investor, among others.

<h2 style="font-size: 36px;">An Ideal Match</h2> 
Touring the three-bedroom duplex, one would never know that its history is so non-linear. Once a grand villa, it became a hotel then was reinstated as a luxurious residence only to be subdivided again. However, this time the divisions are financial rather than physical.

Having spent 25 years in property, Senior Director Sam Sproston joins the agency with two decades of experience selling homes in South West London. For the majority of his tenure at Knight Frank, he was office head and oversaw record-breaking sales in areas such as Wandsworth, Clapham, and Richmond, amounting to over £800M of property. He arrives with impressive contacts and a considerable social following. 
James Williams has significant experience in prime and super-prime property markets. Leaving after 18 years, he was the longest-serving partner in Knight Frank’s London Sales business. Meanwhile, Peter Norgrove has set various selling records. With experience at Hamptons International and Knight Frank, he also spent eight years at Savills. Both James and Peter specialise in Richmond-Upon-Thames and join as Senior Directors. 
Working in real estate since 1993, James Morrison spent 25 years at Savills, where he launched an office in Wimbledon Village. He generated record revenue and profit for the company during his tenure as Head of Office. He joins United Kingdom Sotheby’s International Realty as Senior Director. 
Senior Director Drew Zendra has 14 years of prime property experience, having worked both at Savills and for a boutique agency. His accomplishments include the highest-value sale in Wimbledon Village. Drew also has experience in the Coombe, Wandsworth, Clapham and Battersea markets. 
Completing the team, Director Alex Philo has almost 22 years of property sales experience in prime and super-prime markets from Wandsworth to Weybridge. In 2020, he took over Knight Frank’s Wimbledon team, dealing with some of the most prestigious houses in SW19, and broke the record for the highest fee in the agency’s southwest division.

Leafy South West London has gradually become an enviable alternative to more central parts of the city. The area is known for its green, open spaces, elegant Victorian architecture and outstanding local schools. Proliferated by enviable enclaves, its neighbourhoods often have a villagey feel and distinct personalities originating from a time before London spread so far beyond the City walls.&nbsp; 
The market here is characterised by local agents, word-of-mouth recommendations and clients who are likely to stay in South West London for the duration of their children’s education. Schools, close-knit communities, and the availability of sufficient outdoor space all serve to anchor families to the area. 
Across the UK, recent political and economic developments have made for a slightly dampened property sector. However, as an area defined by cash buyers and secondary homes, PCL’s prime and super-prime markets are relatively buoyant. Nonetheless, the ultra-wealthy can afford to wait for a more optimal time to buy or sell. By comparison, South West London has a less discretionary market. Clients’ immediate requirements – for more bedrooms, a larger garden, or proximity to specific schools – have all driven continued movement. 
It is predicted that South West London’s property sector will continue to show resilience. This expectation is grounded by a needs-based market and families with deep emotional ties to the area as well as increasing interest from HNWIs and the investability of heritage property in characterful, quintessentially English neighbourhoods.&nbsp;

<h2>Prime Cotswolds</h2> 
As the wealth corridor expands, more HNWIs are considering a Cotswolds country house. United Kingdom Sotheby’s International Realty has an established Country division, based in Cobham, that covers desirable neighbourhoods in Surrey and Berkshire. However, the Cotswolds property market makes for fertile ground.

<h3>A Country House Aficionado&nbsp;</h3> 
The Cotswolds represents a new opportunity for United Kingdom Sotheby’s International Realty. Prime country property specialist Andrew Barnes is the principal hire for the fledgling territory. He joins as Senior Director, bringing 37 years of experience and valuable market insights.&nbsp; 
Andrew’s property career has taken him from Prime Central London to the South of France and back. In his first managerial role, he oversaw the top-performing branch of the company’s 300 UK offices and became the youngest director in its history. As Commercial Director, Andrew later rebranded and expanded a London-based business that is now one of the largest developers of private clients’ super-prime homes. He also has experience working in Knight Frank’s Country House department. 
Andrew specialises in the area north of the A40, above Oxford, with Kingham, Soho Farmhouse, and Daylesford Organic Farm forming something of a golden triangle of super prime addresses. Living and working in the Cotswolds, he is passionate about the area and its property market. “It’s gratifying to sell people homes that they live in,” Andrew reveals. “I have a local, boutique agent mentality, but now have a corporate engine room behind me. From my point of view, this makes us the most complete brokerage.” 
Around 90 per cent of Andrew’s business comes via recommendations from former clients due, in part, to his decade of experience selling country homes. He is uniquely positioned to advise on all components – including costs, timings, planning and listed building issues – involved in buying and selling unmodernised property.&nbsp;

<h3>The Cotswolds Market</h3> 
Spreading across Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire and touching on surrounding counties, the Cotswolds is known for its rolling hills and charming villages of limestone cottages. It is home to the country’s largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), which stretches almost 800 square miles. 
Life in the Cotswolds is truly seasonal. Just as the farmers sow crops in the spring and harvest in the summer, the property market also has an annual cadence. Most properties have sizable gardens if not acreage and local vendors understand that a property’s land and location constitute half its appeal. Houses are therefore marketed in spring and summer when their exteriors will look their best. 
Last year, however, the selling season was bookended by an election announcement and the autumn budget. This made for a hesitant marketplace, meaning there is pent-up interest this year that should see the beginnings of a resurgence. Two years ago, it was a market defined by sealed bids and homes sold at high prices. 
This uptick in the local property market was fueled by an increased interest in the area. Previously frequented by an older visitor, the Cotswolds is now attracting a different demographic. Investment in members’ clubs and leisure facilities has driven interest both from visitors and buyers. As a result, the Cotswolds has gradually adapted to cater to this market. Farm shops have become artisanal delis while sleepy drinkers’ pubs have been restored and reinstated as charming coachhouses. 
“There’s now a young, London crowd here including lots of media and tech people,” Andrew explains. “Only 20 years ago, you would be hard-pressed to find this even in a cool Cotswolds pub. I believe we’re at the beginning of an exciting resurgence driven by accessibility, the quality of local schools and a change in perception. There’s never been a better time to come to this market.”

News of the expansion follows a year in which United Kingdom Sotheby’s International Realty achieved £1.2B in total sales value. The agency is also redoubling its efforts in its Country division, which covers Surrey and Berkshire, including the additional hire of local expert James Phillips.

This April, RM Sotheby’s is eschewing the conventional auction format in favour of a trio of sales that embody exclusivity and discretion. Among them, Shift Online offers a collection of nearly 100 supercars from Europe and the Middle East, with bidding open exclusively online from 23rd to 28th April. The roster includes automotive icons such as a 1971 Ferrari Dino 246 GT by Scaglietti, a 1988 Bentley Continental Convertible by Mulliner Park Ward, and a 2007 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 Edition.

Gianni Agnelli, the industrial titan and heir to the Fiat empire, was not merely Italy’s wealthiest man; he was its style icon, its powerbroker, and in many ways, its uncrowned king. L’Avvocato, as he was known, controlled 4% of Italy’s GDP and 16.5% of its industrial research investment, shaping both the country’s economy and its aesthetic sensibilities. 
As befitted a man of his stature, Agnelli’s personal garage was a reflection of his eclectic tastes and sharp sartorial eye. This month, three cars from his private collection will cross the auction block, each a compelling piece of Fiat’s storied history. 
Foremost among them is a 1974 Fiat 130 Familiare, a bespoke commission that remained in Agnelli’s possession for 11 years. Only three of these rare vehicles were ever built, all for members of the Agnelli family. This particular example, resplendent in silver with faux wood trim, is the only one to feature a roof rack complete with a wicker basket—a detail that became its defining hallmark. In the winter months, it was put to spirited use, transporting Agnelli and his skis to the slopes of St. Moritz. 
Then there is his Panda 4x4, a seemingly modest but brilliantly engineered winter runabout. Owned by Agnelli for 15 years before being entrusted to its current consignor, this Mk2 Panda was meticulously restored to its original condition earlier this year, standing as one of the finest examples of Fiat’s plucky off-roader. 
Completing the trio is an exceptionally rare Lancia Thema Familiare, one of only two prototype models built by Zagato. Acquired and driven by Agnelli himself, its silhouette bears an uncanny resemblance to the Fiat 130 Familiare, a poetic echo that ties this remarkable collection together. Bidding for these storied automobiles is open until 24th April.

Born in Istanbul in 1929, Burhan Doğançay began his artistic journey under the patronage of his father, painter Adil Doğançay. His formative years and experimental phases showcased his impressive range, with his skills spanning abstraction, photojournalism, painting, sculpture, and photography. Yet, it was his relationship with the vernacular of urban walls and doors that carved his niche in the canon of contemporary art. 
Doğançay’s iconic Ribbons series, which emerged in the early 1970s, marked a transformative shift in his oeuvre. Departing from his usual textured, collage-based representations of decaying urban surfaces, these works embraced a refined, abstract sensibility. These paintings have a deep relationship with Türkiye’s characterful street culture and stand out for their striking evocation of Islamic calligraphy. Doğançay acknowledged these connections in the titles of some paintings while leaving others open to interpretation by not naming them.

On 5 November 2024, Donald Trump made an historic comeback as the 47th President of the United States of America. This landmark event coincided with record-high citizenship applications from Americans, a phenomenon commonly dubbed the “Donald dash”. 
Home Office data reveals that 6,131 US citizens applied for UK citizenship in 2024 — the highest number in two decades. The number of applications surged 40% in the final quarter of the year, reflecting a seismic post-election exodus. 
Becky Fatemi, Executive Partner at UK Sotheby’s International Realty, reported an immediate reaction from affluent Americans. She shared that she received five calls from Americans soon after the election results, expressing a desire to move to the UK. In fact, one family arrived the very next day, willing to fork out £70,000 a week for a good apartment near schools. Speaking to The Telegraph, Becky commented, “That's people saying, ‘he's here, and he's here for the next four years, and I don't want to be, so these are the dates that we're flying over’."

Further, London’s status as a global financial hub remains a major draw – beyond its economic significance, the city promises an incredible quality of life, thanks to globally acclaimed schools, world-class leisure amenities, and access to excellent healthcare. 
The country’s impressive architecture, seamlessly harmonising heritage and modern-day convenience, is another standout feature.

<h3>Non-Dom Tax Holiday</h3> 
The Labour government’s 2024 Autumn Budget introduced tax amendments to plug the $40 billion deficit left by the previous government. One of the key changes was the overhaul of the non-dom tax regime and its replacement with the foreign income and gains regime (FIG). 
Under the current non-dom tax regime, non-domiciled citizens (UK residents whose permanent home is another country) were taxed only on their UK assets, with foreign assets taxed only if brought into the UK. However, starting&nbsp; 6 April 2025, the new system will adopt a residence-based model, taxing residents on their worldwide income and gains. 
To ease the transition into the FIG system, non-doms will benefit from a four-year grace period, during which they will not have to pay taxes on their assets abroad, provided they have not been a UK tax resident in any of the 10 consecutive years before their arrival. 
During this period, non-doms can bring foreign income into the UK at a discounted tax rate — rather than the standard 45% income tax, non-doms will be subject to only 12% for the tax years 2025-26 and 2026-27 and 15% in 2027-28. 
This four-year grace period creates a strategic window for Americans looking to settle in the UK, allowing them to establish a foothold in the country while mitigating hefty taxes on foreign income. 
An additional perk to this tax break is Donald Trump’s support for “ending the double taxation of overseas Americans.” At present, Americans residing abroad must file tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), potentially leading to taxes in both the U.S. and their country of residence. If Trump lives up to his promise, Americans living in the UK will enjoy a dramatic reduction in their tax burdens.

<h3>The Weakened Pound</h3> 
The pound hit a 14-month low on 18 January, closing at 1.217, and dipped again to 1.229 on 2 February. While it has largely rebounded since, the market is bracing for continued sterling fluctuations through the first half of 2025.&nbsp; 
The precarious state of the pound comes with a silver lining, as the time is ripe for international investors to capitalise on the UK's prime property market. As of March 13 2025, purchasing a £3M townhouse in London would cost $3,879,300, as opposed to $4,028,100 in the final quarter of 2024.&nbsp;&nbsp; 
Meanwhile, Trump’s tariffs have prompted fears of a vitiated market and a plummeting dollar, with the currency hitting a three-month low in March 2025. However, even with the dollar losing value, the promise of relative economic stability in the UK remains attractive to investors.

With respect to the property market and the broader social landscape, the UK has a well-documented history of resilience and stability. This gives rise to optimism among incoming Americans who are fleeing perceived instability and an uncertain property sector.&nbsp;

Inside, the bespoke touches continue with Rubicon Grey leather punctuated by Speed Yellow accents, from the stitching to the seatbelts.
