It is impossible to overstate the influence of the Roman Empire for architecture in Europe. Cities were now shaped by grids and forums with aqueducts, bridges and comprehensive civic architecture linking Spain into Imperial networks all over the world. The Aqueduct of Segovia was built across Castile and León in the 1st&nbsp;century CE. It perfectly displays how function and symbolism worked hand-in-hand at this time for Spanish architecture. 167 arches of precision-cut granite blocks created an imposing feature on the landscape that spoke to progress and real governance for all to witness.

<h2>New Lights and Layers</h2>
By the 8th&nbsp;century CE, most of the Iberian Peninsula was now governed by Islamic rule. This brought with it an entirely new philosophy of how buildings and their status were created, developed and used by the people that engaged with them. 
Much more considered use of geometry and light was prioritised as ornamentation to give meaning instead of merely decoration. The incredible Alhambra&nbsp;was built on a hillside overlooking Granada in the 13th&nbsp;and 14th&nbsp;centuries using arcades, exquisite vaulting and spatial symmetry in a poetic way. It coincided with the final political phase of Islamic governance but signified the apex of its influence for stunning structures in the country at the same time.

A great basilica at the centre anchors the entire structure with control and discipline writ large on every spire and façade. Modernisme was a fusion of architecture, literature and art that supported and encouraged the Catalonian boom at the turn of the 20th century. Barcelona was expressing itself and its status with commissioned buildings that shared a progressive and powerful identity. Their design made them integrated works of art where materials, ornamentation and structures were allowed to be experimented with, and upon. The Eric Parry Architects studio emerged in 1983 right at the heart of this creative response. This was quietly revolutionary for commercial spaces in London and brought with it a much more civic sensibility than the city had previously adopted.

London in the 19th&nbsp;century saw a rapid increase in the middle and upper classes appearing in an ever-expanding city. New neighbourhoods were being developed that needed all of the attendant leisure and retail services to support them. On the outskirts of what was then Central London, the city was transitioning from a semi-rural location to a desirable district that was fashionable and attractive to all who could afford it.
The linen maker Benjamin Harvey was keenly aware of this social shift and was steadily making a name for himself amongst this new, emerging demographic. His original shop on the corner of Knightsbridge and Sloane Street, an address that would eventually become famous around the world, was positioned to serve the fine linens, silks and household fabrics that these households needed for practical use. When Harvey passed away in 1850, the district in which his shop had found a home was already entering a new phase. This was a new era-defining change in the way retail would operate over the next 200 years that saw demand move away from places trading in one speciality towards the new concept of a department store.

Benjamin’s widow, Anne Harvey, looked to her son-in-law, James Nichols, for guidance on how the business could survive and thrive in this new era. Under his custodianship, the store’s offering began to broaden into full garments that were ready-made, personal goods and effects and millinery to literally provide luxury from head to toe. The effect Nichols had was formalised as a partnership with an accompanying name change to Harvey Nichols &amp; Co in the early 1850s.
This evolution was perhaps best expressed in the physical transformation of the store that arrived a short while later. In 1889, the architect C.W Stephens designed a purpose-built new shop with large display windows and attractive facades that faced the street, all surrounded by majestic and powerful red brick. Stephens was aware that retail locations were now as much about spectacle and visual engagement as they were about the transactions inside. Prestige and projected sophistication were the order of the day and Harvey Nichols &amp; Co wanted to become a landmark of this philosophy writ large in bricks, mortar and window dressing.

<h2>An Iconic Identity</h2>
As success followed through the early part of the 20th&nbsp;century, the idea of department stores as curators of taste was developing too. The brands that held the highest status in this space were those that could carry a distinct identity through everything they offered and the way they did it. For Harvey Nichols, this meant developing a clear objective to become editors of style and purpose. The designers, cosmetic products and lifestyle accessories that were chosen to appear in the stores were carefully selected to align with the brand identity they had built. 
This character of the store was evident across its environment and atmosphere that often felt more akin to a gallery or high fashion showroom. It allowed the brand to reflect and respond to modern trends and emerging product lines without having to change any of the fundamental essence of what Harvey&nbsp;Nichols was. They could lead where others followed and introduce where others would be attempting to catch up. All of which maintained relevance and attraction to their clients.

<h2>Style Spreads</h2>
Harvey Nichols and its flagship <a href="https://sothebysrealty.co.uk/area-guides/london/knightsbridge/" rel="noopener">Knightsbridge</a> store cultivated a wonderful luxury presence for over 100 years that had successfully navigated two world wars and a litany of social changes and developments in London. As high-end retail careered towards the 21st&nbsp;century, a new chapter was being written for the brand that would ultimately see it travel the world and establish new footholds in significant locations. In 1991, Dickson Concepts purchased the brand for almost £53 million and a pivot towards international luxury was set in place. This would cement its unique and independent identity but augment it with the operational capability to trade all over the world. Harvey Nichols was becoming a brand that travelled very well.
It began with a strategy to arrive in areas of recognised regional wealth growth in the UK. The Leeds store was the first to be unveiled, pitched as the Knightsbridge of the North for the top half of the country. Shops in Birmingham, Manchester and Dublin soon followed as Harvey Nichols spread their inimitable style all over the isles. Importantly, the brand was simultaneously establishing a foothold on the international stage.
In 2000, the first international Harvey Nichols store opened in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, at the Al-Faysaliyah Tower complex. This was joined by a presence in Dubai, Kuwait and Doha as the Middle East was now similarly enchanted by the same philosophies that Benjamin Harvey first set in motion almost 200 years ago. A total of 13 flagship stores now provide their unmistakable luxury service all over the planet.

<h2>Cultural Connections</h2>
There are very few retailers that are so keenly understood and as culturally visible as Harvey Nichols in the UK. It serves as an enduring symbol for ambitious and aspirational lifestyles that align themselves with best-in-class products and designers. This connection is perhaps best served through the rather tongue-in-cheek exploration of that world through the celebrated BBC comedy television series, Absolutely Fabulous. It became a shorthand for the champagne and couture excess of the late 1990s, with Harvey Nichols often at the core of their frequent shopping trips and late, long lunches.
However, the much more serious matter of championing emerging design talent and fabulous brands is one that Harvey Nichols continues to take absolutely seriously. Their stores often stock less-established fashion houses first, allowing them to reach a worldwide audience and continuing the overall Harvey Nichols tastemaker status in a clear way.

As the 21st&nbsp;century progresses, Harvey Nichols is adapting and evolving to find new ways of cosmopolitan innovation. Founded in London in 2016 by Gary Stanesby, after his time as a senior partner at Purcell, Stanesby studio works across high-end residential, hospitality, heritage and cultural projects. That line tells you a lot. The practice is not trying to impose a house style in the obvious sense. There is no single trick. No one big flourish. What it seems interested in instead is pressure. How far can a building be pushed before it stops feeling like itself? How do you make an old house work harder without flattening its character? How do you add comfort, light and modern infrastructure without getting carried away by your own intervention?
That is harder than it sounds. Especially in London, where so much high-end residential work sits inside listed buildings, conservation areas and difficult planning conditions. Stanesby is unusually well placed for that kind of job. The practice states that retrofitting existing buildings is central to its approach to net zero, and that it has particular expertise in historical and listed buildings. That matters. Retaining and adapting older buildings is now widely understood to be a better carbon choice than demolition and rebuild, because it preserves the embodied carbon already locked into the structure. Historic England’s recent guidance makes that case directly.
So when Stanesby talks about breathing new life into heritage assets, it is not just aesthetic language. It is increasingly the practical argument too.

You can see that attitude clearly in Palace Green in <a href="https://sothebysrealty.co.uk/area-guides/london/kensington/" rel="noopener">Kensington</a>, one of the practice’s most telling projects. The scheme involved the renovation and extension of a Grade II private house, reworked to include five apartments and a detached mews house. What is interesting is not just the fact of the conversion, but the method. According to the practice, the new-build elements were developed through research into Philip Webb’s design principles, using contemporary brick detailing and hand-crafted materials to connect old and new. It would have been very easy for a project like this to become a heavy-handed heritage exercise, full of period theatre or self-conscious contrast. Instead, the idea seems to have been to stay in conversation with the original building, rather than compete with it.

That same discipline appears in Hyde Park Gate, a detached house on a private road near Kensington Palace. Stanesby handled planning, detailed design, interiors and delivery. The project is large and unapologetically rarefied: reception rooms, generous bedroom suites, a spa, an 18-metre pool, cinema, gym, games rooms, guest and staff accommodation.
In less careful hands, that kind of brief can tip quickly into nonsense. What makes it notable is the way the practice frames it. The house is presented not as an excuse for excess, but as a complex planning and design exercise shaped around circulation, structure and use. The practice describes it as one of the last major double-basement developments permitted in the Royal Borough of Kensington and <a href="https://sothebysrealty.co.uk/area-guides/london/chelsea/" rel="noopener">Chelsea</a>, which is significant in a borough that tightened its basement rules years ago through specific planning guidance. In other words, this is not luxury for luxury’s sake. It is luxury under pressure, and under rules.

<h2 id="h.yt306imkir7y" class="c0">Lancelot Place</h2>
Then there is Lancelot Place in Knightsbridge, a new-build row of five seven-storey townhouses in a conservation area, just by <a href="https://sothebysrealty.co.uk/the-journal/harrods-the-home-of-the-best-luxury-brands-in-london/" rel="noopener">Harrods</a>. This is different ground. No historic house to restore. No Arts and Crafts lineage to pick up. No old fabric to work around. And yet the same questions apply. How do you build something new in a place that is already visually crowded with wealth, status and architectural ego? Stanesby’s answer seems to be restraint. The houses are stone-fronted and urban, designed to slot into one of the most scrutinised <a href="https://sothebysrealty.co.uk/the-journal/richest-neighborhoods-in-london/" rel="noopener">neighbourhoods in London</a> without becoming crude statements.

<h2 id="h.4eb0ntle6bo" class="c0">Against the Noise</h2>
What stands out across these schemes is that the practice seems more interested in substance than style. That may sound old-fashioned, but it is not. In fact it feels more current now than a lot of the visual noise that has dominated domestic architecture for the past decade.
There has been a glut of houses that perform contemporary living in a rather tired way: overglazed, overlit, overdesigned. Stanesby’s work suggests a different set of priorities. Let the plan do the work. Let the materials earn their place. Let the building hold onto some dignity.

Even the practice’s move into cultural work follows that line. Its ongoing feasibility study for Hastings Contemporary is about reconnecting the gallery to the urban and social fabric around it. That phrase could easily read like consultancy filler, but in the context of the wider portfolio it makes sense. This is a studio that seems to think buildings are part of a setting before they are part of a brand. The setting may be a private road in Kensington, a conservation area in <a href="https://sothebysrealty.co.uk/area-guides/london/knightsbridge/" rel="noopener">Knightsbridge</a> or a public-facing gallery in Hastings. Either way, the instinct is similar. Start with what is there. Pay attention. Do not overstate your case.

That, really, is why Stanesby Architecture is worth looking at now. The studio has confidence to let a building keep its own voice and the good sense to know that in domestic architecture, especially in England, the smartest move is often not invention but judgement. That may not be the easiest thing to photograph. But it is usually what makes a house last.

Brutalism is an architectural movement that took hold of Europe in the 1950s and quickly asserted its influence over the world. In essence, it is an art form driven by social purpose in a direct, raw and uncompromising manner.
The term itself comes from one of the most influential figures in architecture to have ever lived, Le Corbusier. He referred to the phrase béton brut, literally translated as raw concrete, to describe the stark unfinished concrete surfaces of the Unité d’Habitation housing project he designed in Marseille in 1952. This was the conceptual beginnings of Brutalism as a whole where the building appeared honest and unfiltered as an expression of functionality in everything one can see.

Defining Brutalism requires an understanding of how the visual elements of a building speak to its function and aims. Essentially, there is an important duality for each factor that can be observed in how it looks and what it does.

The exposed concrete and materials display structural frameworks in a clear way.

Alison and Peter managed to build on what Le Corbusier had uncovered to frame Brutalism as a philosophical and ethical position. They had both begun practising together after their marriage in 1949 and were part of a new generation that was unhappy with how early modernism had begun to soften and be shaped by traditional and familiar traits. 
It was their aim to remove the polish and decoration that was creeping back in to replace it with a stricter and more disciplined design language where form followed function. This theoretical work was the driving force that established a Brutalist blueprint that the world could follow.

Social purpose and community value were the foundations of every true Brutalist building. It became simple to see where Brutalism design should be applied in both materials and methods to speak to a population that had witnessed such changes and developments. Brutalist shapes and elements came to define buildings that would signal new ways forward for civic progress in the 1950s, 60s and 70s.
It was evident everywhere in the new built environment through:

<h3 style="line-height: 1.8;">The Barbican Estate London 1965-1976</h3>
The mixed-use nature of <a href="https://sothebysrealty.co.uk/the-journal/grade-ii-listed-building-guide/" rel="noopener">Grade II-listed</a> Barbican Estate is a testament to the Brutalist ambition of its creators Chamberlin, Powell &amp; Bon. In the heart of the City of London it is both a residential and cultural complex that combines towers, terraces, elevated walkways, schools and gardens into one cohesive urban footprint.
Its textured and tactile surfaces were constructed through board-formed concrete in a masterpiece of post-war city planning for the capital. Importantly, this was all created on a bomb-damaged site that literally saw The Barbican rise from the rubble in the city. This remains a striking social placemaking project that connected people in a new living environment with clarity, commitment and strength.
<h3 style="line-height: 1.8;">Boston City Hall Boston 1968</h3>
There was certainly plenty of discussion and consternation when Kallmann, McKinell &amp; Knowles completed their international competition-winning Brutalist building at the end of the 1960s.
The façade of exposed raw concrete and large cantilevers are a classic example of a building articulating its structure on the exterior. The construction, materials and supporting theories of Brutalism allowed the people to see new societies being shaped in permanence and function. This meant that they too could respond with pragmatism and commitment within a built environment that offered space to work, learn and ultimately grow.
