The Collection: five top-notch townhouses
London is known for its eclectic mix of architecture, from modernist blocks to Art Deco apartments and contemporary new builds. But perhaps no housing style is as iconic as the townhouse. Whether Georgian or Victorian, these period buildings are beloved by many for their pleasing proportions, historical significance and handsome features, which is why they are as popular today (if not more) as they were when they were first built. Here are five of our favourites currently on the market.
Chapel Street, Belgravia, London
Belgravia is one of the finest corners of the capital and is known for its beautiful and historical streets. One such example is Chapel Street, a charming road connecting the glorious Green Park with Belgrave Square and is lined with grand Georgian townhouses. This property, which has six bedrooms, five bathrooms, a swimming pool and an expansive gym, is particularly impressive. Not only has it been newly renovated so the interiors blend contemporary design with period charm, but it was once home to Lord Heseltine, a significant political and cultural figure. A rather fun fact, we think, to drop into conversation when hosting here.
Chester Street, Belgravia, London
Another Belgravian beauty (we told you this area had top townhouses aplenty), this six-bedroom home sits pretty on Chester Street. Originally built in 1837, it has been lovingly restored to ensure the original period features shine. In particular, the ornate cornicing and detailed ceilings take our fancy, as do the pleasing parquet floors and marble bathrooms. In fact, from the wood-panelled library to the dining room featuring a Chinese-inspired lacquered wall, all the rooms have been beautifully decorated. And while the interiors pay tribute to the building’s heritage, the house is far from stuck in the past: it’s been fully fitted with a slick contemporary kitchen and bespoke new furnishings throughout.
Regent’s Park, Marylebone, London
We don’t like to be biased, but Regent’s Park might be home to some of the best townhouses in London. Take this exquisite Grade I-listed property as a case in point. It was designed by John Nash, one of the most important British architects of the Georgian and Regency periods, who worked on the likes of Buckingham Palace and the Royal Pavilion in Brighton. Its stunning white-painted stucco façade is telling of its time, as are the interiors, which evoke grandeur. Aside from its architecture, one of our favourite things about this five-bedroom, five-bathroom home are the views: the lovely large front windows overlook the lush treetops and green expanses of the park.
Glebe Place, Chelsea, London
This enchanting four-bedroom townhouse is situated in Chelsea. The yellow-brick exterior has been sensitively restored to glorious effect, while its interiors, which have been meticulously designed by Sophie Paterson, boast serious design credentials. Eclectic pieces – think tiger-print armchairs, abstract art and designer ceramics – look exquisite against a simple backdrop defined by period proportions and plenty of natural light. The location is also divine: situated on Glebe Place, the property is moments away from the ever-fashionable King’s Road.
Hans Place, Knightsbridge, London
Hans Place in Knightsbridge takes its name from Sir Hans Sloane, the Anglo-Irish physician and naturalist who collected more than 71,000 items, which became the foundation for the British Museum when Sloane died in 1753. Today, however, the street is better known for its handsome townhouses, such as this seven-storey property. While the façade has plenty of period charm, the interiors have been refurbished from top to toe. Perfectly suited to modern family life, it has seven bedrooms, six bathrooms and lots of lovely light-filled living spaces. The colour palette is simple and soothing, making it a wonderful retreat from the bustle of city life. Hyde Park and Green Park are both minutes away.
