Best Rooftop Cinemas in London

Ranging from stylish rooftop venues atop historic buildings to expansive open-air venues, the capital is keen to reinvent the concept of traditional cinema and introduce a unique entertainment option to those who live and work in the city.

The concept of open-air cinema dates back to 1916, when the first recorded venue opened in Broome, Australia. Over time, improved projection and sound systems have allowed rooftop and open-air venues to gain popularity across major cities like New York, London, and Sydney.

In a time when digital streaming frequently takes priority, the resurgence of outdoor cinemas – from pop-up film events to drive-in theatres –  reflects the desire for connection and offers a unique social experience that fosters nostalgia and a sense of community.

Let's explore the best rooftop cinemas in London, highlighting what makes each venue unique and worth a visit.

Best Rooftop Cinemas in London

Rooftop Cinema Club, Peckham

Rooftop Cinema Club is revolutionising the traditional cinema experience, providing viewings complete with plush seats, personal wireless headphones, social lounge areas, and a carefully curated collection of films.

Originating as a single rooftop venue in London in 2011, the venue has since expanded globally, with locations in New York, San Diego, Houston, Chicago, Miami, and Fort Worth. Two UK locations, in Stratford and Peckham, offer a full food menu and a bar featuring a selection of cocktails, beer, and wine.

The flagship Rooftop Film Club venue, located within the Bussey Building in Peckham, is renowned for its vibrant rooftop bar and scenic views south of the Thames. Visitors can begin their evening with a beverage at the Bussey Bar, a rooftop soireé space with a sunset view, before settling into their deckchairs as the film starts. Popcorn, pizza, and drinks can also be ordered through the venue’s app and delivered straight to their seats, ensuring a minute of the film is not missed.

Films are shown twice daily on weekdays, with an additional screening on Saturday, Sunday, and Bank Holidays. Doors open before the screening so visitors can enjoy all elements of the experience from golden hour to dusk. The venue also organises a monthly programme of games, prizes, talent Q&As, movie premieres, and sing–a–longs to make viewings unforgettable.

Roof East, Stratford

Uniquely situated on a multi-storey car park opposite Westfield Stratford City, Roof East offers a distinctive rooftop venue for a cinema experience. In addition to hosting live music, DJs, and themed parties, this family-friendly spot provides a wealth of entertainment options, including crazy golf, batting cages, and lawn bowling, alongside a selection of local street food vendors. With both indoor and outdoor seating, comfortable sofas and bean bags, and easy access via public transport from Stratford Station, it's the perfect spot for a movie night. The Rooftop Film Club organises screenings, so visitors are guaranteed a high-quality selection of films catering to enthusiasts or those wishing to make a day of their outing.

Luna Cinema

Luna Cinema provides the opportunity to watch films screened across several iconic UK locations, including Regent’s Park, Hampstead Heath, and Westminster Abbey. Known for being the largest open-air cinema in London, this pop-up outdoor venue promises an impressive setup with large HD displays and advanced sound technology.

Guests are welcome to bring their picnic baskets; however, the venue is on hand to provide food and drinks – selling classic movie snacks such as popcorn, hotdogs, and sweets. For most screenings, doors open an hour and a half before the scheduled time to allow guests to settle in, grab a drink and a snack, and soak up the ambience. For an extra charge, attendees can also enjoy the comfort of a chair accompanied by a snug blanket.

While outdoor screenings take place during the summer months, Luna Cinema also offers a winter season packed full of feel-good festive favourites. From the 15th to the 23rd of December, it will return to two indoor, heated venues: the stunning pavilion of Kensington Palace in West London and the magnificent St George's Hall in the heart of Liverpool.

The perfect festive movie experience allows film lovers to escape the chaos of last-minute Christmas shopping and relax with friends and family enjoying classic films on the big screen.

Openaire Cinema, Paddington

Sponsored by Haagan-Daz, Openaire Cinemas' "float-in" experience adds a unique twist to the outdoor cinema concept, replacing traditional cinema seating for a fleet of 16 eco-boats.

Open over the summer months, guests are invited to pick up their boat and headphones to watch films on the big screen while floating across the picturesque waters of Little Venice down to Merchant Square in Paddington, where the ship is moored for the duration of the viewing. And if you haven't found your sea legs yet, don't worry; dozens of deckchairs are placed along the towpath. Popcorn and snacks ordered through a dedicated app can be delivered right to your boat or deckchair, whilst award-winning artisan pasta chef Ravi Ollie will put up a pop-up kitchen on the water's edge to serve outstanding and freshly prepared Italian cuisine.
