Abar Rooftop

Mandarin Oriental Mayfair Hotel

Hotel and bar professionals from all over the world have long understood the allure of the Mayfair perspective on the London skyline. When the Mandarin Oriental Mayfair became the first new luxury hotel to appear here in over a decade in June 20224, it was no surprise that plans for a rooftop bar to be its crowning glory swiftly followed. After months of speculation and press rumblings, Abar Rooftop took its place as an intimate 50-seat sky bar and terrace that is setting the standard for top-tier rooftop entertainment.  Getting there is an experience in itself, with a glass cube private lift taking you into the space with suitable style. Inside, one can appreciate the detail of a conceptual cocktail menu built around the seasons and divided into Natsu (Summer), Aki (Autumn), Fuyu (Winter) and Haru (Spring). Some fantastic examples of these creations include the signature Artichoke Thyme with Whistle Pig whiskey, Cynar, garlic oil & thyme essence. With the stunning natural scenery of Hampstead Heath as your vista, an entire world of woodland and wild takes a similar journey through the seasons in a marvellous synergy of the modern and the eternal.

The Windmill

Taking a gentle stroll from Savile Row or Hanover Square brings you to Mill Street – which  runs between the two – where you will find one of Mayfair’s true hidden gems, The Windmill. This charming pub was originally created in the 1980s when a former nightclub and the adjoining property were combined into a multi-room entertainment space that channels a classic and traditional British pub heritage. The welcoming interior and sedate charm, the chandeliers and wood panelling lead to an intriguing short stairway and that’s where one of the best-kept secrets in Mayfair resides. The roof terrace seats around eight tables in an area lit by soft lights with overhead heaters and cost blankets, making sure it can be enjoyed when the mercury dips. This is a view that takes one away from the average horizon of a modern London sky, with Georgian rooftops and chimneys acting as a wonderfully out-of-time backdrop. With award-winning food recognised by the National Pie Awards, traditional real ales and seasonal cocktails, this hideaway has the full suite of Mayfair experiences at your disposal.

The May Fair

The prestige and status of the May Fair Hotel on Stratton Street was evident from its opening in 1927 when King George V and Queen Mary were present to see the ribbon being cut. As you would expect, The May Fair Terrace here is not pitched towards the usual after-work drinks and bustle of venues in the neighbourhood. This is an elegant and secluded space designed for events, functions and drinks receptions that caters for 60. Of course, one of the main attractions with The May Fair Terrace is its self-sufficient nature that allows for a private bar, bathrooms and cloakrooms. If the occasion does demand a rather more comprehensive approach, then the private dining rooms adjacent to the terrace are an elegant addition to the evening. Antique walnut flooring, glorious dark panels and marble fireplaces lend a regal touch to proceedings that will have guests flowing between these two spots, bringing the outside in. Mayfair’s historic architecture outside paints the perfect picture to accompany both.

The Maine Mayfair

This beautiful townhouse was once the residence of the Duke of Montrose and is now a highlight of Hanover Square. The design here is clearly inspired by the rustic old-world charm of New England, aligned with the aesthetic of an English Country garden, and it works superbly well. Greenery is a huge part of the restaurant, bar and event space but it is on the terrace that the foliage really envelopes its guests and acts like a secret portal to an often unseen al fresco Mayfair. The Maine Terrace is an all-season space with heaters and quality pashminas to keep guests comfortable in the cooler months, overlooking the distinguished Hanover Square. Bamboo chairs, linen banquettes and mohair upholstery are all combined with lush natural decorations for a unique setting that softens the edges of the buildings surrounding it. Taking further cues from the Maine setting, the food on offer is full of brasserie grills and seafood, with a regular Shuckfest taking place that brings the highest quality oysters to the rooftops. Although there is a fantastic cocktails and drinks menu provided here, it does feel like the appropriate place for a coffee and cake too, particularly during the festive season. Taking a break from the bustle below in a Mayfair wonderland is quite the thrill indeed.

Everything about Mayfair suggests an elevated standard of service, quality, produce and experience. For centuries now, this marvellous neighbourhood can be relied on for a fantastic evening out with friends, and with this collection of rooftop bars to choose from, these standards look set to keep rising.
