English Premier Cru - Nyetimber Vineyard
Published: 01 July 2026
Nyetimber vineyard is rightly regarded as one of England’s most prestigious wine producers. Renowned for its sparkling wines crafted in the traditional method, it’s seen as the landmark brand for England’s first globally recognised wine region, Sussex. Nestled close to the charming South Downs, the chalky soil is the perfect counterpart to the Champagne region, so much so that rumours have circulated for the last decade that major houses in France are buying up land in Sussex owing to the success and growth of makers like Nyetimber.
Exclusive almost to the point of being entirely private, Nyetimber Vineyard is seldom open to the public apart from at the discretion of its owners on a few select dates a year. However, the chance to visit offers a rare opportunity to peer back behind the curtain, and explore not only the grape vines that have given the estate its reputation, but historic manor houses, and tasting experiences that highlight the unique qualities of Sussex as a wine-making region.

Origins from Chicago to Holland
The transformation of Nyetimber from a historic manor into a world-class wine estate began in 1988 under the ownership of Stuart and Sandy Moss. The couple left their home city Chicago, and had travelled the length and breadth of Europe to realise their dream of opening a vineyard, viewing sights across France, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands. They recognised the untapped potential of the West Sussex terroir, specifically its greensand and chalk soils, and took the then-radical step of planting traditional Champagne grape varieties. Their tenure was defined by a pioneering spirit that laid the foundational infrastructure for not only their estate but the future of wine making in England.
In 2006, the estate entered a new era when it was acquired by the Dutch businessman and entrepreneur, Eric Heerema. Under his stewardship, Heerema significantly increased the estate's vineyard holdings across Sussex, Hampshire, and Kent, while also appointing a dedicated winemaking team led by Cherie Spriggs and Brad Greatrix. Achieving something of a monopoly, Nyetimber has since sold many plots of its estate off to fledgling winemakers that are now established vineyards in their own right. Its role at the heart of the boom in the British wine industry cannot be understated.
Location and Terroir
As mentioned, the Nyetimber vineyard is nestled in the heart of the South Downs in West Sussex, located between the historic villages of West Chiltington and Pulborough. Sussex is famous for its chalky, undulating hillsides that boast prime southern and south-western exposures, within the Sussex microclimate. The result of this orientation ensures that the grapes achieve a slow, steady ripening process, protecting them from the harsher elements while allowing sugars and phenolics to develop in harmony. The surrounding landscape is rich in both water storage and warmer temperatures courtesy of its sheltered valleys and ancient woodlands, creating a unique living greenhouse that buffers the vines against late spring frosts and excessive winds, whilst protecting them from sustained dry spells through spring and summer.
When coupled with the cool air of the English Channel, just a stone's throw away towards the coast, these conditions allow the grapes to retain a vibrant, crisp acidity and aroma. The soil at Nyetimber is defined by a rare combination of greensand and prehistoric chalk, providing the exceptional drainage necessary for all premium viticulture. Acting as a natural reservoir, reflecting the specific environmental attributes of the Champagne region by regulating water uptake and reflecting heat up to the vines, the soil composition is directly responsible for the hallmark minerality and structure found in Nyetimber’s wines, imparting a sense of place coming through taste.
The Wine
Nyetimber has carved out a prestigious reputation by focusing exclusively on the production of high-quality sparkling wines, crafted strictly according to the traditional method of secondary fermentation in the bottle, which comes from continental Europe. The estate’s winemaking philosophy centres on the classic trio of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, which are meticulously selected before blending. The flagship Classic Cuvée is a classic, composite blend of the three key grapes, with a refreshingly crispy finish. The Rosé, ever a popular choice in England, often features a higher proportion of Pinot Noir to achieve its vibrant colour and red-berry profile.
The estate’s reputation as a world-renowned winemaker is anchored by landmark years such as 2003 and 2009, which are often cited by connoisseurs as turning points that proved the ageing potential and structural integrity of English sparkling wine. More recently, the 2014 and 2015 vintages have been lauded after benefiting from particularly long, sun-drenched growing seasons, which allowed the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes to reach their pinnacle in terms of taste and crispness.
Visiting Nyetimber Estate
The Nyetimber estate is a fascinating blend of ancient history and modern viticulture. Centred around a medieval manor house and a collection of meticulously restored timber-framed buildings, the layout is designed to harmonise the agricultural needs of the vineyard with the estate's heritage, featuring a state-of-the-art pressing centre and temperature-controlled cellars. Due to the Heerama family living on the estate, public access is strictly limited to a series of exclusive open days scheduled throughout the spring and summer months. However, bespoke private tours can occasionally be arranged by appointment for those seeking a more tailored look at the pinnacle of English sparkling wine, or for serious collectors and buyers looking for a sizable order or rare vintage.
Visitors enter through the estate’s rolling gates, encountering the 15th-century medieval barn, which serves as the primary venue for hosting guests, while the surrounding gardens offer sweeping vistas of the vineyards. Tours establish the traditional method for growing, and the process is discussed in meticulous detail, as guests learn about the labour-intensive process of hand-harvesting and the delicate art of blending, followed by the silent transformation that occurs during years of extended bottle ageing on the lees. Each tour culminates in a tasting, with options available to try multiple house blends and the occasional vintage, for those curious to taste the finest samples Nyetimber can offer.
Sparkling Sussex and the South Downs
Nyetimber is perfectly positioned within the scenic South Downs for a deep dive into exploring the burgeoning wine culture of this sparkling region. The surrounding landscape is a tapestry of historic villages, and ancient walking paths that weave through lush orchards, farmland and of course, vineyards. The towns of Pulborough, Petworth, and Arundel are within minutes of Nyetimber and boast medieval castles, bustling local markets, river walks, Roman villas, and more.
The wonderful thing about Nyetimber as a wine producer, as was already highlighted earlier, is that it has been instrumental in launching multiple vineyards in the county. Neighbouring Nutbourne with its iconic windmill, Stopham, Roebuck, and Wiston estates are all worth visiting, and unlike Nyetimber, they remain open throughout most of the year. Exploring more of Sussex’s now world-renowned sparkling wines furthers appreciation for the efforts at Nyetimber in paving the way ahead for the region’s most valuable new crop.
