Holland Park Adventure Playgrounds

The area of West London has long been a favourite for families in the capital. It has everything needed to support an active modern life that prioritises a relationship with nature as much as it does for all of the benefits of city living. The green spaces around the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, in particular, are a wonderful example of how having an urban oasis to rely on can make such a difference to everyday lives.

The adventure playgrounds of Holland Park are an opportunity to let the little ones go wild. They combine a historic and beautiful backdrop with the all-important aspects of imagination and play for a day out that you may well find yourself returning to again and again.

Holland Park Highlights

Holland Park is around 54 acres of formal gardens, fantastic facilities and woodland areas that even include historic ruins to explore. Built on what was the estate of a grand 17th century Jacobean mansion, this is now a place to find serenity, relaxation and more than a little dash of fun and excitement.

Since 1952, it has operated as a public park that is constantly developing and adding features in response to the requirements of modern life. And the Adventure Playgrounds have been a star attraction here since significant refurbishments and additions back in 2019.

Free to Roam

The Holland Park Adventure Playgrounds are an outstanding and free area within the park for children aged 5 to 14 years of age, with some smaller enclosed play areas nearby for preschool visitors. It is open from 7:30 am every day until the light fades at dusk and home begins to call.

Careful Integration

Ensuring the adventure playground space integrates seamlessly into the overall park scenery was a clear objective executed perfectly well. This meant thoughtful integration with the existing woodland environment to reflect the lines, landscapes and topography that have been maintained and developed here for over 400 years. It feels a suitable and appropriate expression of play within nature, which inevitably means that parents, carers and adults who accompany the children feel the benefit of the open air too. With natural rain gardens and drainage features assisting water management in the famously changeable London weather system, this place wears its sustainability credentials proudly on its sleeve too.

Immersive & Imaginative

The main thrills for any adventure playground, of course, come from the equipment and rides. Holland Park is fortunate to have a collection of classics and modern attractions that create a fully immersive experience to explore for hours.

Zip Wire

The star of the show is undoubtedly the 25-metre zip wire that takes children on an exhilarating journey through the air from a raised platform. It moves at quite a pace and provides a great image when one first enters the park to raise excitement and anticipation.

Climbing Capers

The frame nets and micro rock climbing structures offer challenges for all ages. With multiple routes possible from different angles, there are corresponding levels of difficulty to tackle and explore. Balance, strength and coordination are all applied in a positive and strengthening way.

Swings & See-Saw

Swings and See-Saws have been a part of the fixtures and fittings in English playgrounds for over a century. At Holland Park Adventure Playground, there are twists on these classic staples that work well in the environment. The tyre swing adds an element of spin to the thrill and a grand see-saw fits around ten for group fun.

Slide Away

The site's steep slopes are repurposed in a bespoke concrete bay that blends into the background to support a collection of slides. Bridges and boardwalks are created from timber in a sympathetic way that links everything together in distinct zones to move and play between. All of which means that children can make circuits to navigate together and build challenges to test their individual times against.

Sensory Play

The woodland setting involves integrated sand, water and sensory play to dig, build, experiment and create in. Connecting with nature in the most tactile way supports a deeper sensory engagement for children and a better appreciation of the world around them.

More to See

If a change of pace is required, then the open fields and dedicated football and tennis courts are all on hand on the site too. There is also the fantastic and calming Kyoto Japanese Garden to explore, with its koi ponds and waterfalls that can calm even the most fretful toddler with a brief walk around it. The design elements of this garden were an important influence on the overall aesthetic of the adventure playground with its Borrowing-View philosophy.

Tips and Tricks

Packing a picnic, especially in the summer months, will allow for maximised time at play without the cues and waiting for facilities within the park or nearby. With so many of the scenic views to sit at, you will be spoiled for choice. If there are any special education needs or children who feel uncomfortable in crowds, then early mornings and late afternoons do present a less frenetic energy to explore everything this wonderful place has to offer.

Staying active and exploring their imaginations, and having a fantastic open space to do so will have little ones transfixed all day. You may even be tempted to join them as they do.
