The Epsom Derby Festival 2024
The Epsom Derby Festival, one of the best flat racing events on the calendar, is set to return for its 2024 edition on Friday, May 31, and Saturday, June 1. This two-day spectacle, celebrated for its history and pure exhilaration, promises plenty of horsing around headlined by the world's greatest flat race.
A Historic Venue
Held at the historic Epsom Downs Racecourse, the festival attracts all sorts of people, from royalty and seasoned racing fans to thousands of enthusiasts who gather to witness the drama unfold from the grandstand enclosures and the famous 'Hill' at the centre of the course. This free area is a favourite among punters who enjoy picnics, markets, and fun fairs, accessible on both days of the festival.
Ladies' Day: Friday, May 31
The festival kicks off with Ladies' Day on Friday, May 31. Known for its fun fashion and high spirits, on Ladies' Day, people take their attire seriously. The highlight is The Oaks, one of Britain’s five Classic races, contested by the top fillies – a young female horse – of its generation. The Group One Coronation Cup also takes happens, known for its fiercely competitive field. Last year, Soul Sister secured a memorable victory for jockey Frankie Dettori, marking his seventh win in the Classic during his final appearance at the festival. In 2022, Tuesday triumphed under the guidance of jockey Ryan Moore, earning trainer Aidan O’Brien his 41st victory in a British Classic race.
Derby Day: Saturday, June 1
Saturday, June 1, is the pinnacle of the festival, Derby Day, where the cumulative excitement has whipped all horse lovers up into a frenzy. This day features the 244th running of the Derby, which was first held in 1780 when Diomed won the inaugural race.
Held on Derby Day, The Derby is the race that every jockey, trainer, and owner wants to win. It is run over a distance of 1 mile, 4 furlongs, and 10 yards over an undulating course climbing the equivalent height of Nelson's Column. With an incredible prize pot of £1.125 million, this is Britain's richest and most prestigious race. The 2023 Derby saw Auguste Rodin clinch victory, giving jockey Ryan Moore his third win and trainer Aidan O’Brien his ninth. The 2022 edition was won by Desert Crown, guided by jockey Richard Kingscote, providing Sir Michael Stoute with his sixth Derby victory, 41 years after his first win with the legendary Shergar.
Tickets, Timings, and Travel
For those attending, tickets for both days can be purchased through the website. Gates open at 11 a.m. on Friday, with the first race starting at 2 p.m. and The Oaks at 4:30 p.m. Saturday's schedule begins with gates opening at 10:30 a.m., the first race at 12:50 p.m., and the main event, The Derby, at 4:30 p.m.
Public transport is highly recommended for travel to the racecourse. Epsom railway station, serviced by South West Trains and Southern Trains with connections from London Waterloo and London Victoria, is the nearest major station. From there, a 10-minute taxi or bus ride will take you to the racecourse, with a shuttle bus service running during the festival. Alternatively, Tattenham Corner station and Epsom Downs station are within walking distance. For a more traditional route, take a double-decker Routemaster bus all the way from London to the racecourse.
Dress Code
Like most race days, the dress code is one of the most exciting parts. For Ladies' Day, women wear midi or maxi dresses and hats, while men don suits and ties. On Derby Day, the dress code is similarly formal; however, more traditional morning dress is often worn by the men, including a waistcoat and top hat.
Beyond the races, the festival offers an array of entertainment and culinary delights. Gourmet food trucks, champagne bars, and live music performances create a vibrant atmosphere, making it a holistic celebration of sport and culture. For families, the fun fair on The Hill is a must-visit, with rides and games to keep children entertained. Exclusive hospitality packages are available for those seeking a premium experience, offering the best views, fine dining, and private suites.
The Epsom Derby Festival is a celebration of horse racing excellence, combining top-tier horsing around, the thrill of a race, and wonderful outfits. Whether you're a die-hard racing fan or attending for the first time, you won’t be disappointed. So put on your finest clothes, snap up your tickets, and prepare to witness history in the making at one of the UK's most iconic sporting events.
