Best Areas in North West London

North west London has it all. Jaw-dropping architecture, majestic green spaces, historical wow factor, cultural dynamism, vibrant communities, luxurious amenities, world-class fine dining – the list goes on. It would be fair to say that this is one of the most inviting, stimulating swathes of urban space anywhere in the world, the cherry on the cake being, the delights of central London are mere minutes away. Here is our guide to the most desirable areas in the ‘NW’ postcode, and what makes them so special.

Hampstead

Picturesque perfection, this world-famous village is one of the oldest established areas in all of London. It first gained real appeal in the 17th century, when it became popular as a ‘getaway resort’ away from the bustle of the capital. While it’s very much part of the city today, it still retains that otherworldly feel: a magic spell of cosy pubs, cobbled streets, historic houses, upscale boutiques, and natural beauty. Sitting snug beside the leafy bliss of Hampstead Heath, this majestic open space is cherished by residents and tourists, offering acres upon acres in which to roam and walk, with sweeping views of London’s skyline from Parliament Hill. Over the years, Hampstead has at times contained more millionaires within its boundaries than anywhere else in the UK, and it has some of the most expensive housing in London: stunning period properties, luxury apartments, and insanely charming cottages.

St John’s Wood

London is rightly celebrated for its thrilling multiculturalism, and St John’s Wood is no different. But two distinguished and distinctly English traditions draw millions of people into this prestigious neighbourhood every year: cricket and The Beatles. Lord’s Cricket Ground – the “Home of Cricket” – is in the heart of St John’s Wood, attracting sports fans who love to hear the classic sound of leather on willow during a big Test Match. Around the corner is the legendary Abbey Road Studios, near the famous zebra crossing where the Fab Four walked over (a photo which appears on their album of the same name). These magnetic attractions aside, St John’s Wood is affluent, peaceful, and quietly sophisticated, with a number of top-class fine dining restaurants, exclusive shops, and a family-friendly vibe.

Maida Vale

This serene, picturesque neighborhood is championed for many reasons, but most notably its peaceful canals and grand, Regency-era homes. The Regent’s Canal is a postcard-pretty feature of Maida Vale, adding a sheen and tranquility all of its own. Here, the waterways meet to the south, at ‘Little Venice’, a charming network of tree-lined waterside paths and colourful houseboats that creates a mesmerising, village-like atmosphere. Warwick Avenue, to the north, is home to a number of elegant cafés, which lean into the lush surroundings and urban calm, and many of the area’s grand mansions, stucco-fronted townhouses, and luxury apartments are bathed in relaxing views overlooking the canals. Clifton Nurseries is one of the best garden centres in London and perhaps all of England – a lush, green oasis with incredible plants and a superb cafe.

Belsize Park

Tucked between the grandeur of Hampstead and the vibrant buzz of Camden, ‘Belsize’ has an understated but powerful appeal all of its own. This well-established, leafy neighborhood is packed with calm residential streets, distinguished period architecture, and an aura of old-world charm meets modern bohemia. Café culture is particularly strong here, with a vast array of independent hotspots serving some of the best coffee and brunch in north west London (Chamomile and Ginger & White are especially popular). For a culture fix, Belsize is the place to immerse yourself in a literary tome – Daunt Books is a genuine local institution. Architecture lovers are in for a treat too – handsome Victorian terraces, Art Deco mansions, and a dazzling array of modernist gems catch the eye in this energetic sanctuary.

Primrose Hill

One of the most highly coveted areas of London, Primrose Hill has long been a haven for A-listers with wildly successful artists, actors, musicians and authors revelling in its heady blend of privacy, exclusivity, and relaxation. It also helps that it is perched up high on one of the capital’s most scenic vantage points, giving it a surreal sense of distance from a city that is actually incredibly close. The breathtakingly panoramic view of the London skyline, from the tranquility of the hill itself, is an intoxicating juxtaposition – but its appeal extends far beyond this iconic feature. Thriving independent boutiques, cafés, food markets and restaurants line Regent’s Park Road, and the quieter side streets are home to beautiful Victorian terraces and period homes, with their characteristic pastel-coloured facades. The residents of Primrose Hill have created a dynamic, homely community, one which also cherishes its proximity to the wonderful Regent’s Park, which sits just on its southern edge.

Queen’s Park

Queen’s Park is now widely recognised as one of the finest neighbourhoods in all of the capital. Known for its welcoming, community-driven atmosphere, it is beloved by media executives and creative types, fostering a trendy yet relaxed vibe that particularly suits young families and high-performing professionals. There’s a suburban tranquility to relish –  amid Queen’s Park itself –  a beautifully maintained green space that serves as a well-functioning hub, with a children’s playground, tennis courts, and wide-open, well-tended lawns. Urban convenience and sophistication surround the park, with a fine selection of independent shops, cafés, and restaurants, many of which have a cutting-edge contemporary feel.  Australian café Milk Beach is a stand-out favorite: renowned for its range of expertly brewed coffee and deliciously quirky brunch selections.

The appeal of north-west London is unquestionable and seems effortless. But its magnetism owes everything to centuries of evolution and refinement. In the 21st century, it draws on rich culture, sumptuous architecture, vibrant communities, and truly historic institutions to deliver a home worth celebrating, and one that many are keen to become a part of.
