A Preview of Classic Cars at the RM Sotheby’s London Auction

Since its inaugural event in 2007, RM Sotheby’s London Auction has made a name for itself as one of the city’s most anticipated annual events. Over the years, the auction has continued to surprise and delight, surpassing expectations. It set new heights with the 2022 Gran Turismo Collection and last year’s Factory Fresh Collection. The upcoming auction, scheduled for the first two days of November, is expected to be one of the most exciting ones so far, with the event held at the Peninsula London in Belgravia, just moments away from Buckingham Palace. Here’s a sneak peek at some of the standout vehicles heading to auction next month.

1936 Delahaye 135 S Works

The 1936 Delahaye 135 S Works is a true icon of the pre-war racing era. Originally designed by French automaker Delahaye, the Type 135 became a revered model in the racing world. This particular car, one of only two 135 S Works ever made, has a fascinating history. Driven by Albert Tivo, a famous French racer closely associated with Bugatti, this car competed in the 1939 and 1949 Le Mans and plenty of other prestigious events. It also made an appearance at the inaugural Goodwood Members' Meeting and helped Thailand's Prince Bira secure a victory at Donington. The vehicle’s legacy, which includes an on-screen appearance alongside Jude Law in a short film made for Jonnie Walker, means it tops the list for collectors and racing enthusiasts alike.

One of the rarest Aston Martin models, the 1963 DB4 Convertible is a prized piece of car history. With only 70 units ever produced, this car’s exclusivity is matched by its exceptional configuration—the only DB4 fitted with a GT-spec engine directly from the factory. Though the original engine was replaced in 1967, the car has undergone an extensive restoration, including the reinstallation of a GT engine. Its Midnight Blue exterior and Red Connolly leather interior have been meticulously restored, matching the original factory specifications. The DB4 has detailed ownership records, including the original factory build sheet and a complete restoration book.

The MG K3 Magnette may appear unassuming, but this small but mighty car is one of the most coveted competition models ever produced. Powered by a supercharged six-cylinder engine, the K3 quickly earned a reputation for punching above its weight. Originally part of a three-car team for the Mille Miglia, this K3 is the only one to retain its original modifications, including a special exhaust setup and rerouted fuel lines. After its Mille Miglia run, the car changed hands and spent time in Australia, where it took part in several races. Though it has undergone partial restoration, much of its original body remains intact, making this a rare and desirable find.

Among the newer cars in the auction is the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series, a powerful modern classic. Limited to just 350 units worldwide, with only 12 delivered to the UK, this car has a firey design, thanks to flared wheel arches and a sleek Obsidian Black finish. Under the hood, the SL 65 AMG delivers a whopping 672 horsepower, making it one of the most powerful cars in its class. The car has seen limited use since 2017 and is presented in excellent condition, with a full-service history and owner's guide included. It’s a must-see for fans of modern performance cars.
