Few London boroughs carry their history as visibly as Kingston upon Thames. Its origins stretch back to at least 838 AD, when it was recorded as 'Cyninges tun' (meaning 'the king's estate'). Its position on the Thames made it a flourishing centre of trade and political life for the centuries that followed.

At the heart of it stands All Saints Church, one of Kingston's most storied buildings, with foundations dating to 1120. There is strong evidence to suggest a Saxon church occupied the same site long before that, and it was here that King Egbert of Wessex convened his great council in 838 AD. Over the centuries, All Saints bore witness to no fewer than eight royal coronations, among them that of King Athelstan in 925, widely regarded as the first true King of England.

The Coronation Stone is perhaps the most venerable relic of the borough's Saxon identity. A block of ancient sarsen stone believed to mark the site of seven Anglo-Saxon coronations, it rests beside the Guildhall with a quiet monumentality that belies its modest surroundings. The Clattern Bridge, spanning the Hogsmill River, is among the oldest surviving bridges in England, dating to around 1200. The ancient marketplace has anchored the town centre for over 800 years — its 1840 Market House, presided over by a statue of Queen Anne, still draws the eye to this day.
