Leinster House: A Victorian Terrace Restored

Set along a graceful sweep of Lancaster Gate, Leinster House comprises nine private apartments within three carefully restored Victorian townhouses in Bayswater.

An Ode to Bayswater’s Victorian Heritage

Completed in 1865 and designed by the celebrated John Johnson, Leinster House forms part of a distinguished Victorian terrace on Lancaster Gate. Johnson, whose work includes Alexandra Palace and the Church of St Mary in Stoke Newington, was known for combining classical proportion with the rich ornamentation – a harmony evident in the pale stucco façades, tall sash windows and rhythmic colonnades that remain defining features of the streetscape today.

Lancaster Gate itself was conceived as part of an ambitious nineteenth-century masterplan to establish Bayswater as a refined residential quarter. The result is one of London's finest examples of Victorian town planning: a sequence of terraces arranged along an elegant curve overlooking the park.

Now Grade II listed, these townhouses are integral to that historic composition. Carefully restored and impeccably reimagined into a boutique residential collection by Wendover Development, Leinster House preserves the character of the original terrace while establishing a new benchmark for contemporary luxury.

Painstakingly restored period detailing features throughout, from ceiling roses, cornicing and panelled doors to decorative plasterwork and window architraves. The staircases at the centre of the building remain a majestic showpiece, combining original Portland stone steps with reinstated Victorian balustrades.

With interiors by Wendover Studio, modern interventions are deliberately restrained. Bespoke oak parquet floors run underfoot, while the colour palette draws on Claude Monet’s painting titled 'Hyde Park' (1871), reflecting the green and sandy hues of the neighbouring park. Kitchens are centred around Carrara marble islands and retain existing marble fireplaces. Bathrooms are clad in Verde Mediterraneo marble, featuring both freestanding baths and walk-in showers.

Several residences extend onto private terraces, some exceeding 1,600 square feet, an unusually generous scale for outdoor space within a historic London terrace.

Leinster House operates with the same considered attention found in its architecture. A 24-hour concierge oversees the day-to-day running of the address, supported by secure RFID-controlled entry and CCTV monitoring across all communal areas.

Modern conveniences have been integrated in each home, including KNX home automation systems with Gira touchscreens for intuitive control of lighting and climate. Security infrastructure is equally comprehensive, with door and window sensors, motion detection and panic buttons at the apartment entrance and beside the principal beds. A residents' mailroom and secure bicycle storage are also provided, while terrace positions are pre-wired should residents wish to install their own CCTV systems.

Leinster House stands on Lancaster Gate, one of Bayswater's most storied addresses, overlooking Hyde Park. The open spaces of the park lie moments from the door, while the surrounding streets of Queensway and Westbourne Grove offer a lively array of cafés, restaurants and independent boutiques.
