Putney Area Guide
Putney is one of southwest London’s most prosperous locales, steeped in history, picturesque landscapes, and fine lifestyle offerings. Situated by the River Thames and enveloped by lush verdure, the area is undoubtedly striking and highly sought after.
The area dates to the Saxon times and has flourished due to its navigable waters. It served as a major port centre in the Roman era and was also the site of the 1647 ‘Putney Debates’ centuries later, which ultimately shaped the British constitution. Now, it is one of Thames’ most significant crossings – as such, Putney has always been a region of note. However, the area never lost its tranquil charm and always offered respite from London’s metropolitan bustle.
Putney has also been the address of many eminent figures over the years – former UK Prime Minister Clement Attlee, former President of Czechoslovakia Edvard Beneš, Selfridges founder Harry Gordon, and American financier J.P. Morgan have all called this neighbourhood their home.
